The poll also found that pet owners spend an average of £400-a-year on toys and treats for their pets – with five of the 1,000 people quizzed saying they spent in excess of £10,000-a-year on their pets.

When quizzed about how much they spent on gifts for their partners each year, those polled spent an average of £300-a-year – £100 less than on their pets.

Christine Richards, 36, of Pinner, north west London – who has been married to hubby Brian for 10 years – said she much preferred cuddles with pet moggy Milo.

She said: “If I had to pick who to cuddle up to in bed it would be Milo, hands down – Milo doesn’t snore or burp, he just snuggles up and goes to sleep, not like Brian.”
