Nominees in the main categories win gifts totaling R$ 641,000
Winning an Oscar is the dream of many artists, but not all nominees leave the ceremony empty-handed. Each year, a group of applicants is chosen to receive a “sweetheart” scholarship called a Everyone wins. Vouchers, food, beauty treatments and even a hotel stay in Italy are among the 60 gift options in the 2023 bag, which is estimated to be worth US$123,000 (R$641,000).
The cheapest gifts in the bag include a $13 (R$67) pack of Clif Thins chocolate and an $18 (R$93) Japanese milk bun from Ginza Nishikaw. This year all treats will be delivered in a Havaianas bag.
Check out the most expensive freebies below:
– Three-night stay at the Punta Imperatore Lighthouse, Italy, for the amount of R$ 46,000;
– Deed for a small parcel of land in Australia, valued at R$261, for the Pieces of Australia conservation project;
– One arm liposuction procedure up to R$ 62 thousand;
– A private consultation with a hair transplant specialist worth BRL 36,000;
– Procedures such as botox, lasers and peels for an amount up to R$ 52 thousand;
– A hand soap from Oprah Winfrey’s favorite list, from the Shinery Radiance Wash brand.
Who receives the gifts?
A total of 27 candidates were selected to receive the scholarship. Gifts are usually given to presenters and nominees for Best Director, Best Actress, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, and Best Supporting Actress.
Recipients, however, can decline. Last year, actor Denzel Washington reportedly turned it down and actor JK Simmons donated it to a charity auction, as did George Clooney in 2006.
When did the tradition start?
The tradition, which began in the 1990s, is not officially affiliated with the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. A marketing company is responsible for selecting gifts and liaising with award nominees.
