‘The periphery is not a scarcity, no, it’s a great power’, says Thiago Simpatia

OR journalist Thiago sympathy is a familiar face on TV Globo mornings. He is in the programs Plus you, Encounter AND It comes from home. However, before reaching the Rio station, he had already crossed other channels, presenting sports and cultural programs. His first name, Thiago Silva de Souza, has given way to the way in which a smiling and charismatic young man was seen by his colleagues.

Simpatia started in a theater group while still in school, made several presentations for the Nascer das Estrelas group and participated in competitions in São Paulo. “It was the theater’s fault. Exactly in 2000, when I was 15, I was studying in a suburban school,” she says. First, the journalist tried to become a footballer and passed through Sao Paulo and Corinthians. “It was then that one of my teachers, Professor Renata, said that you had vacated a seat in the school theater,” he says. “I entered the show playing two characters. Thank God and the Orixás, I fell in love with art.”

His maternal grandparents, Sérgio and Norma, have always encouraged him. After acting, the young man continued to follow the path of art – to communicate. Theatrical masks have given way to the microphone and camera. He has joined the cast of the series ghetto gangfrom Record, and also did the plays black Angel AND Orfeu da Conceição. And from there she started advertising.

Restless, Sympathy ended up with Jô Soares and the old man Domingão Faustão. “I had an opening to make extras. “I saw that place as the place to make contact. I started asking producers and cameras what the routine was like,” she says.

In this period of figuration he also follows a course and becomes a study technician. He was invited to be a microphone operator for the Band when he accepted the offer. “Since the salary was a little higher, I went to the Band,” he recalls. At the new post, the journalist said he had heard from his colleagues that “he was good in front of the cameras”.

Right now, he has created a YouTube channel to talk about the shanty town and guidelines from the periphery. “One of the first views was by Celso Zucatelli, which led me to Rede TV”. She was the presenter who put Thiago’s stage name. There, she presented the Peripheral voice. After this period, he went to work in TV Nova Cidade and later in Uol.

When asked about his profession, he says he always wanted to be a journalist. “I discovered myself as a communicator. I realized that through journalism I would have more ramifications to work with,” she says.

When the topic is representativeness, this is an important agenda for the journalist. “Today, for me, it’s a great pride and I’m part of a story. The periphery is not a lack, no, it’s a great power”, he underlines. For him it is important to have young people who come from a reality similar to his in prominent spaces. “Mothers stop me on the street to say that their son went back to school because of me,” he adds.

The presence of people of color on television is not yet as expressive and there is a long way to go to have more black professionals. “It has been so many years that we have had to demonstrate how beautiful we are, how intelligent we are. Today it is the materialization of a struggle that has no end date, but we are alive”, she underlines.

Simpatia’s dream is to be a presenter. “Make a real program, a real program, for the people,” she adds. When asked about a message she would like to leave, she is categorical: “You are not the dimension of your dreams, but the dimension of your nature”.
