In a video posted on Instagram, the presenter took a stand against the president’s speeches on people with intellectual disabilities
Mion, who is the father of romeo (diagnosed in Autism Spectrum Disorder), classified the act as “capacitive”. He also criticized Lula and said the speech reinforces prejudices.
“On the pronouncement of the @lulaoficial about the intellectually disabled,” wrote the presenter in the caption of the video in which he explains his indignation at the episode. “I come here again because the autistic community continues without a minute of peace. Actually, this time, it has affected not only the autistic community, but also all people with intellectual disabilities,” he explained.
“Lula has recently sent a speech that has shocked everyone. During a meeting with ministers to talk about these absurd, violent cases that are taking place in schools. Communities affected”, he defended.
Then, the presenter explained the reasons for his criticism of these lines: “In the first place, that the term used, for many years now, is intellectual disability and not mental disability, as Lula used it”, he said. “We have to control ourselves, we have to learn, we have to adapt, right?” Mion asked.
“Second!” he continued, “are you referring to these people as having ‘life imbalance issues’? Not only is this extremely pejorative, but it entitles other people to continue to use these terms, which I have already mentioned, their need to stay away once and for all in the past,” he stressed.
Romeo’s father also explained the daily struggle that this community faces for “the acceptance, awareness, homologation of all conditions” and criticized the attitude of President Lula.
“Irresponsibly, your speech connects people with intellectual disabilities directly to the cases of violence that, sadly, we have seen happening all over the country. This is absurd. There is no evidence for it. As a father of an autistic person, I feel affected and I imagine other fathers, mothers, guardians, people with intellectual disabilities, too, they all felt affected.”
Mion concluded by recalling that “before representing and speaking for everyone, a President of the Republic must know and respect everyone”.
