Stole a song and was a producer: what we know about the Eurovision 2023 favorite

The final of the annual Eurovision Song Contest will take place on May 13 and the semi-finals will take place on May 9 and 11. Sweden’s Lorin is called the main favorite in the competition – bookmakers now predict her victory with a probability of 42%.

If it seems to you that somewhere you have heard this name before, then do not sin on a feeling of deja vu. Lorin really already participated in Eurovision in 2012. And not only accepted, but brought victory to his country thanks to the song Euphoria! Now everyone wonders if she will be able to repeat her success. According to forecasts, it is close to this achievement. So far, only Irishman Johnny Logan, winner in 1980 and 1987, has succeeded.

Loreen was born on October 16, 1983 in Stockholm to a Moroccan Berber immigrant family. As a child, she and her family moved to Westeros, and it is this city that she now calls home. Although the parents of the future singer were Muslims, they adhered to liberal views, and therefore did not interfere with the creative work of their daughter. She became known to the Swedish public after participating in the show Idol in 2004. She finished fourth there.

After that, Lauryn gave up singing for a while and worked as a television producer for several years. But in 2011, she decided to return to the stage and participated in Melodifestivalen, a national competition where it is traditional to choose who will represent the country at Eurovision. Luck did not favor Lauryn that year, but the popularity of her song gave her confidence. Lauryn decided to take the competition by storm again in 2012, and for good reason – this time she was the one who went to represent Sweden in the competition and claimed victory.

This time the singer goes to Eurovision with the song Tattoo, and this track brought her not only love from bookmakers, but also trouble. Lorin was accused of plagiarism – the network noticed that the composition is similar to Ukrainian singer Mika Newton’s song “In Captivity”, which she recorded in 2005. However, many came to Laureen’s defense, noting that europop melodies often sound the same.

Will this be a fatal mistake for the singer, or will the bookies be right again and are the public ready to forgive Lauryn everything? We just have to wait until the end and we will find out.
