Lula declares three days of official mourning for the death of Rita Lee

President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva decreed, this Tuesday (9/5), three days of official mourning for the death of the 75-year-old singer and songwriter Rita Lee. The text was published in an extra edition of the Official Gazette (DOU).

On his Twitter account, the president also paid tribute to the late singer. “Rita Lee Jones is one of the biggest and brightest names in Brazilian music. Singer, songwriter, actress and multi-instrumentalist. An artist ahead of her time. I thought the Queen of Rock title was inappropriate, but the nickname does justice to her trajectory,” he wrote.

For Lula, the artist has left a big mark on Brazilian music with his boldness and creativity. “She spared nothing and no one with her humor and eloquence. She tackled machismo in life and music and inspired generations of women in rock and art. She will never be forgotten and leaves her legacy in music and in the books for millions of fans around the world My fraternal hug to the children Beto, João and Antônio, family and friends Rita, I miss you now,” he concluded.

Rita Lee died on Monday night (5/8) at her home in São Paulo, according to her official profile. The vigil, open to the public, will be held on Wednesday (10/5), from 10:00 to 17:00, in the capital São Paulo, the artist’s hometown. “According to Rita’s wishes, her body will be cremated. The ceremony will be private. In this moment of deep sadness, the family is grateful for everyone’s affection and love,” read a family statement.

Rita Lee is survived by her husband, Roberto de Carvalho, and three children: Beto, 45, João, 44 and Antônio, 42.

This was the first official mourning of Lula’s third term. The last mourning established by the Brazilian state was on December 31, again in the government of Jair Bolsonaro, for the death of pope emeritus Bento 16.
