Florida teacher under investigation after showing gay Disney movies

A Florida teacher is being investigated by the Florida Department of Education (DOE), in the United States, after showing the film “Mundo Estranho” which features a homosexual character. She is accused of “indoctrinating” her fifth grade students.

In a video posted to TikTok, the Hernando County School District first grade teacher explained that she decided to show the kids the film after they completed standardized tests. The students were divided into two groups: those who had finished the activities and those who were still taking the tests. “I thought it would be a great time to give them a brain break by showing a movie related to what we were learning in school,” Jenna Barbee said.

Ms. Barbee added that the students’ parents have given permission at the beginning of the school year which allows them to watch PG-rated movies. The teacher also said those responsible “had no objection to specific content” with the permission.

Also, the teacher chose the film “Mundo Estranho” because it was related to his Earth Sciences and Ecosystems unit. She clarified that the gay character “had nothing” to do with the decision. However, Barbee noted that she has “a lot of students […] talking about how they are part of the community before showing this innocuous film”.

“What better way to showcase all of these patterns along with great lessons about overcoming differences, spreading kindness, communicating, and chasing your dreams?” asked Barbee. “None of my students cared or blinked. They didn’t even know it was a big deal until the board member and the state made it a big deal.”

However, Jenna Barbee has received the charge due to one of the students being the daughter of a school board member and “is currently determined to erase all forms of representation from our schools.” The official also told CNN that “it is not the teacher’s job to impose their beliefs on a child. […]”in the classrooms.

“I get her perspective, that she really doesn’t want this to be shown in her house. I’ve never seen that perspective before, so I didn’t think it was a big deal, but seeing how upset she was, I said to her, ‘I get it. my lesson,'” the teacher retorted.

Finally, Professor Barbee added that her lectures have been observed by a member of the administration, who regularly calls students “for questioning”. She says the experience was traumatic for the children.

The plot of “Mundo Estranho” follows the new mission of the family of space explorers, who after the disappearance of the patriarch returns to the strange world of the title, an unknown and treacherous place, full of fantastic creatures and ready to swallow anyone. And where the old adventurer has been living for the past few years. There they discover that the greatest threat they face is the differences between them.

The film has a screenplay by Qui Nguyen and directed by Don Hall, the duo responsible for “Raya and the Last Dragon” (2021), and the cast of original voice actors is led by Jake Gyllenhaal and Dennis Quaid, who return to live father and son 18 years after “The Day After Tomorrow”.
