An unexpected Marvel Comics leak has fans in an uproar this Wednesday (5/17). Images that appear to be the last pages of “The Amazing Spider-Man #26”, the next issue of the Spider-Man saga, have been spread on social networks with the revelation of a surprising twist: the death of Kamala Khan, aka Mrs. Marvel, in the arms of Peter Parker.
The main reason for the outrage from fans is the popularity of Kamala, who became one of the most successful Marvel Comics characters of the 21st century, with the performance of Iman Vellani (“Avengers: Quantum Encounter”) in the Disney+ series “Ms. Marvel “, and his upcoming participation in the film “The Marvels”, which will debut in November.
Another reason for the controversy is the fact that “The Amazing Spider-Man #26” is scheduled for release on May 31, at the height of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month. Because of the date, the death of an important and representative person tends to increase public revolt. Primarily not being part of a publisher-level event or even his own comic, but rather a publication where he appears as a minor character.
As angry fans reacted to the leak, Marvel decided to use the controversy as a marketing ploy. On Twitter, Marvel posted, “Warning: ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ spoilers are online. Avoid the web (or not), at your own peril.” Subsequently, in a tweet featuring a cover image of “The Amazing Spider-Man #26,” the company said, “It’s the heroic sacrifice no one expected. The Marvel Comics Universe mourns the loss of their fallen friend in a special single to be released in July”.
The special issue will be dedicated to the heroine’s funeral and the mourning of other Marvel heroes.
There are still no details on how and why Kamala dies. However, in comics, the death of famous characters is usually not permanent. Marvel, in particular, recently introduced resurrection protocols for mutants, allowing them to defy death and offer that power to the underprivileged. Although there is already speculation about the developments, there is still no official information on the subject.
The film “The Marvels” will premiere on November 9 in Brazil, one day before the United States.
