To get the coveted role, the actors must be convincing in the casting. But sometimes the stars were not claimed at all for their dramatic talent. We tell you which players have outperformed their competitors in the most unexpected ways.
These castings have definitely remained in the memories of actors and directors alike.
Ryan Gosling in The Notebook
Ryan Gosling has long been loved by everyone, and we used to think he got roles easily because of his looks (especially now that he’s playing Ken). But it was not always so. Notebook director Nick Cassavetes told Ryan, “I want you to play this role because you’re not like other young actors in Hollywood. You’re not handsome, you’re not cool, you’re just an ordinary guy who looks a little crazy.”

Samuel L. Jackson in “Pulp Fiction”
Do you remember the iconic burger scenes from the Quentin Tarantino movie? Turns out, it was a love of fast food that helped Samuel L. Jackson land the role of Jules Winfield. Tarantino was late for the casting, and the actor decided to take advantage of the lunch break. He bought himself a burger and a milkshake, but just as he was about to start eating, the director just arrived and the casting continued. Samuel was so hungry and angry that he walked straight into the room with food.
“Quentin and I were sitting on the couch and he came in and started sipping a cocktail, biting into a burger and looking at all of us. I was scared to death. His eyes just popped out of their sockets. And he didn’t give the contestants a chance,” recalled producer Richard Gladstein.
Ben Affleck in Gone Girl
One of the most powerful and memorable roles in Affleck’s filmography is the role of Nick Dunn, a loving husband who was looking for his missing wife when everyone suspected he might be involved. Director David Fincher said the actor got it because of his smile.
“You do the casting based on the most important scenes. There’s an episode in “Gone Girl” where the hero smiles when the local press asks him to stand next to a poster of his missing wife. I scrolled through Google and found about 50 frames of Affleck smiling in public places,” the director said.
Now Ben would barely get the role. Due to his pained expression during walks and outings with J. Lo, Affleck has already become a walking meme.

Emma Watson in Harry Potter
Today, it’s hard to imagine that anyone else would have handled the role of excellent student Hermione Granger better than Emma. But Harry Potter author JK Rowling was skeptical at first and thought Watson was “too pretty” to embody the heroine’s image.
However, Rowling changed her mind when Emma herself called her unexpectedly.
“I just fell in love with her, she talked for at least 60 seconds without breathing, and I said, ‘Emma, you’re perfect,'” Rowling recalled.
Mel Gibson in Mad Max
It seems like you have to look your best to ace an audition, but Mel Gibson’s experience proves otherwise. Gibson inadvertently stole the role of a friend he was driving to an audition when he showed up to the audition bruised and beaten. The day before, he got into a violent fight in a bar. His bruised face caught the attention of casting assistants, who took a picture of him and said, “Man, we need monsters in this movie!” When you’re healed, come see us.” Thus, Mel landed one of the most iconic roles of her career.
Jason Momoa in Game of Thrones
Jason Momoa gained notoriety for his role as Khal Drogo, the brutal leader of his people, in the hit TV series Game of Thrones. At the casting, the actor had the task of conveying the personality of the character without saying a word. Momoa didn’t lose his mind and performed a haka, a traditional Maori dance he knew. It made a lasting impression on the casting director.
Wayne Knight in Jurassic Park
Wayne Knight’s sweaty face made him an ideal candidate for the role of greedy and ridiculous geek Dennis in Jurassic Park. Steven Spielberg chose it after seeing Wayne in the famous scene in Basic Instinct where the actor nervously watches Sharon Stone cross her legs. Watching, Spielberg thought, “What if it was a dinosaur?”.
