Starting Monday (7/10), the Superior Electoral Tribunal (TSE) will launch an innovative advertising campaign on television and radio. Entitled “Valuing Democracy,” the campaign, which will air for two months, aims to deliver a strong message against the coup. The surprise? The message is conveyed through a rap.
The 30-second video features a rap battle, where democracy is represented by a woman. She competes against a rival in a lively party with a DJ and people of all ages. Dressed in a white shirt with the inscription “Democracy”, she sings with conviction: “Sovereignty and popular strength: it must be respected! not luck . You can retire that the conscience here is strong!
The campaign slogan, “In the moment of truth, democracy speaks louder,” rings out at the end of the video, reinforcing the initiative’s purpose.
The context of the campaign
The campaign comes to light ten days after the TSE sentenced former president Jair Bolsonaro to eight years of ineligibility. By a score of 5 to 2, the Court found that the former president committed an abuse of political power by attacking, without evidence, the electoral system in a meeting last year with ambassadors at the Palácio da Alvorada, while trying to be re-elected. The trial made Bolsonaro the first former president in history to lose his political rights in a lawsuit against the TSE.
Furthermore, the campaign marks six months since the invasion of the Three Powers’ buildings in Brasilia, reinforcing the need to strengthen the defense of democracy.
TSE message
Giselly Siqueira, communication and multimedia secretary at the TSE, points out that the campaign aims to underline that the democratic environment does not open room for rights violations, attacks and hate speech. According to her, “The message of the song is clear: ‘Freedom of expression is not a license to spread lies, hatred, beatings or fights.’ We must always reject any kind of violence, respect differences and always be alert to face any kind of disinformation”.
The TSE campaign, therefore, not only underlines the importance of Democracy, but condemns the use of fake news to propagate a coup in the country.
