McKala believed he was talking to Dacre Montgomery, Billy from “Stranger Things”; the alleged plaintiff asked for money and even persuaded the American to divorce
Testimonial to the channel CatfishedMcKala said he joined an art forum years ago, where he met a user who introduced himself as Dacre Montgomerythe actor of Stranger things. She said she was suspicious from the beginning, until she made her believe that this was the actor’s real profile.
According to McKala, before the release of the fourth season of Stranger Things, the alleged actor told her to watch episode 4. The chapter in question was the only one of the season in which Dacre appeared. Also, she sent her poems similar in style to the book DK extensionpublished by Montgomery in 2020.
Convinced it was the actor, the artist began having romantic conversations with the alleged Montgomery. Using public information that the celebrity was with model Liv Pollock, the profile said he was in an unhappy, toxic and controlling relationship.
“I empathized, because my husband was like that too,” McKala said.
The artist never got to personally meet the person he was talking to. According to her, she could not even make video calls due to Liv’s checking presence. Despite this, after a year of conversations, the alleged Dacre Montgomery said he would like McKala to be her-her-girlfriend and asked her to separate from her partner.
“If you want this to work, you have to decide between me and your husband,” the profile wrote. For her, it was an easy decision, made over months. “You treat me better than him,” McKala said.
The orders didn’t stop there. Out of the blue, the alleged actor said he needed the money, as his bank account was shared with Liv’s. To help him, McKala borrowed small amounts over time, until he realized she’d transferred a total of $10,000.
It was then that the artist looked for the channel fished, which has a mission to help people who believe they have fallen for online scams. People from the YouTube program were quick to expose the profile, discovering several inconsistencies in the conversations between McKala and the alleged Dacre. Furthermore, they pointed out that the profile must have sought out his details to exploit his emotional traumas.
When asked how she believed in the scam for so long, McKala got emotional.
“Love makes you do crazy, stupid, irrational things,” she said. “You have to experience something like this to understand.”
