The singer had been battling chronic conditions like diabetes, kidney disease and dilated heart disease for a decade.

This Saturday, 26, the Brazilian music scene greeted Márcio André Nepomuceno Garcia, widely recognized as MC Marcinho. The singer, who won the title of “Prince of Funk” in the 90s, has had his career marked not only by unforgettable successes, but also by a series of health problems.

Marcinho emerged at the height of Hurricane 2000 with success lonely rap, which quickly became a staple of funk tune. His lyrics, which portrayed the reality of the suburbs of Grande Rio, were known to promote “good funk”, avoiding catchy content.

In 2006, Marcinho’s upward trajectory was abruptly interrupted by a serious car accident. The collision, involving the singer’s van and a bus, left two people dead and two seriously injured Marcinho. Without health insurance, hospital costs ate their savings. The singer returned to the stage still recovering, using a wheelchair.

The same year brought even more challenges. In another incident, Marcinho and his family were the target of an attempted robbery, resulting in minor injuries to his wife.

After two years, in 2008, Marcinho resumes his stand-up shows, focusing on private events. However, health problems persisted. In 2019 he was hospitalized due to a heart attack. In 2020 he had to face complications related to covid-19, being hospitalized in intensive care.

In 2021, the singer was hospitalized again in Rio de Janeiro due to an infection in his left foot. After surgery to scrape and analyze the bone, the infection spread to his lung, forcing him to be intubated and he fell into a coma for four days.

Surprisingly, he awoke quickly from his coma, leaving the doctors baffled. Following his recovery, Marcinho thanked his doctors, God and the fans for their messages of support, describing his experience as “otherworldly”. In addition to these episodes, the funk singer had been suffering from chronic conditions for about ten years, including diabetes, kidney disease and dilated heart disease.

Hospitalized since June at the Copa D’Or hospital in Rio de Janeiro due to heart and kidney failure, the singer had to receive an artificial heart. Unfortunately, the picture evolved into a generalized infection, which led to multi-organ failure, the cause of his death.
