On the eve of the decade that has passed since the accident that knocked out seven-time Formula 1 champion Michael Schumacher, little is known about the current state of health of the former German driver, who has never been seen in public again and lives under the protection of his family. Gradually, details of his recovery and treatment are released to the press through testimonies from close friends and family.

“Schumi”, as he is affectionately called, has been living under 24-hour medical care and the care of his family since he suffered a skiing accident in Meribel, France, in December 2013. One of the doctors’ initiatives, according to the German newspaper Bild, consists of cognitive therapies with familiar sounds to stimulate the former driver. One of these sounds comes from the cars Schumacher lived with for years.

The newspaper reported that the team in charge of Schumi’s treatment plays the sounds of a Mercedes-AMG in the hope that the former driver will react. The proposal is to make him remember the noise of the cars he lived with for 20 years.

This attempt is part of the rehabilitation plan as on more than one occasion it was the patient’s best-known contexts that allowed him to recover some mental faculties during the period in which he was in constant care.

Michael Shumacher’s health is being kept under wraps at the request of the pilot’s wife, Corinna Betsch. In addition to his wife, his two children Mick and Gina-Maria, as well as a team of doctors, nurses and masseurs, have also been working with the German around the clock for almost 10 years.

In a recent interview, the champion’s brother, Ralf, recalled his partnership in Formula 1 with Schumi and the teachings of his older brother. “I miss my Michael back then. Life is unfair sometimes. Michael was lucky many times in his life, but then this tragic accident happened. Fortunately, modern medical options have allowed us to do some things, but nothing It’s more like before.”

Remember the accident

Michael Schumacher was on holiday with his family when he suffered a head injury ten years ago. The accident occurred during a skiing holiday in the resort of Maribel, in the French Alps. He entered an unmarked dangerous area between two lanes. Schumacher was wearing a helmet but hit his head hard and was in a coma for six months before being taken home. He never appeared in public again.

Periodically, friends of the former driver’s family who lived with the seven-time champion at the height of his Formula 1 career comment on his state of health, but without details, protecting the interest of the driver’s wife, Corinna Betsch, who prefers not to speak and reveal the details of the situation. One of the few who maintains contact with family members is Jean Todt, former president of the FIA and former head of Ferrari, the team where Schumacher worked together with Rubens Barrichello.
