After Taylor Swift was hit by a leak of fake AI nudes on X, the former Twitter, searches for the singer’s name had to be blocked as a “security measure,” according to a spokesperson for the platform. Anyone who searched for “Taylor Swift” on the social network this Saturday, the 27th, came across an error message.

X’s head of business operations, Joe Benarroch, confirmed the block: “This is a temporary action and is being carried out with an abundance of caution as we prioritize safety in this matter.” Since Thursday 25th, the singer’s fans have been alarmed by the images created by the technology and have asked both the platform and lawmakers to take action.

As a result, the White House also became involved in the affair. According to Variety, Joe Biden’s press secretary, Karine Jean-Pierre, said she was “alarmed” by the circulation of images generated by artificial intelligence. “Obviously there should be legislation to address this problem,” she said, when asked whether the President of the United States would support the creation of stronger legislation on the matter.

In Brazil, a bill criminalizing nudes created by artificial intelligence has been underway in the Chamber of Deputies since December 2023. The text aims to amend the Criminal Code and the Law on Children and Adolescents to aggravate the penalties already provided for, inserting images manipulated by technology into the debate.

Reality Defender, a cybersecurity firm focused on AI identification, has determined with 90% certainty that Taylor Swift’s nude images were created using AI-based technology.

One of these images shared by a user on X, formerly Twitterit was viewed 47 million times before the account was suspended on Thursday the 25th. The social network suspended several accounts that posted fake photos of the singer, but the images were shared on other platforms and continued to spread.

Although X said he was working to remove the images, fans of the pop superstar flooded the platform in protest. They posted related keywords alongside the phrase “Protect Taylor Swift” in an attempt to tone down the explicit images and make them harder to find.

Taylor Swift’s spokesperson, Tree Paine, has not yet commented on the case.
