Not 13 guests! Rules of conduct at the table in the royal family

Many people know not to leave the table until the queen has finished eating and announces the end of the meal. But there are plenty of other rules at the Buckingham Palace table.

tea ceremonies

It’s no secret that the royal family loves to drink tea. And Prince Charles likes when the tea leaves are steeped directly in the teapot. The calculation is one scoop per cup plus one more on top. For green tea, which the prince adores, the water is heated to 70 degrees, for black – up to 100. Charles also adds honey directly to the teapot!

By the way, according to the protocol, family members hold the cups in a certain way: with the index finger and thumb at the top of the handle, and if necessary, support the base of the handle with the middle finger. The spoon should not touch the edges of the cup, nor can you drink with the sound. The ladies try to bring the cup to their lips from one side so that the lipstick doesn’t get printed in multiple places.

13 guests

Queen Elizabeth II ensures that there are fewer or more guests at the table, but not 13 guests. She does not believe in unlucky numbers, but respects the traditions of other peoples and does not want to offend anyone. By the way, guests are seated at tables by a special service, and no one will be left without a seat.

The royals enter the dining room in order of succession to the throne, so Meghan and Harry always entered after Kate and William. The Queen and Prince Philip enter first, followed by Prince Charles and Camilla.

Can I go out?

If a member of the royal family needs to go to the bathroom during a meal, just excuse yourself, get up and leave, nothing needs to be explained. But there should be no other reason to leave the table before dinner is over.

If at the same time a person has not yet finished his dish, he must cross a knife and fork over it. This gesture means something completely different to us! And if it’s time to remove the plate, the cutlery should rest on it at the bottom right.

Cutlery and napkins

The napkin is usually folded in half. To wipe your mouth, you need to use its inside, which then no one will see.

The knife should be held in the right hand, the fork in the left, tines down, while the food should not be pierced, but picked up.

Food outside the palace

Members of the royal family are strictly prohibited from tasting food at fairs, markets and other places where official permission cannot be obtained. The reason is simple: they must not be poisoned. By the way, for the same reason, British monarchs avoid shellfish, but other members of the royal family are not forbidden to eat oysters.
