Zone of Interest and The Snow Society are strong Oscar contenders for Best Foreign Language Film
To warm us up before the Oscars begin, we’ve put together a list of films nominated for the category. In fact, this category is important for highlighting great productions that were not made in Hollywood.
Nominees for the 2024 Oscar in the Best Foreign Language Film category
Area of interest – United Kingdom
The film directed by Jonathan Glazer, based on the novel by Martin Amis, portrays the life of Auschwitz commander Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig during World War II. Although they apparently live a peaceful life in a house with a garden, in reality they are near the concentration camp, where a genocide for which they are responsible takes place. The film, awarded at Cannes and nominated for an Oscar, mixes drama, war and history to address the horror of Nazism in a unique and disturbing way.
The Snow Society – Spain
Based on the book by Pablo Vierci, “The Snow Society” tells a true story that happened in 1972: the crash of Uruguayan Air Force Flight 571, which was carrying a rugby team to Chile, and crashed into a glacier in the Andes. Of the 45 passengers, only 29 survived, remaining trapped in a hostile and inaccessible environment. Extreme measures were necessary to survive.
the Captain – Italy
“I, Capitano,” nominated for an Oscar for best international film, is an Italian drama that follows the journey of young brothers Seydou (Seydou Sarr) and Moussa (Moustapha Fall). Seeking a better future, they decide to leave Dakar, Senegal, and embark on an epic adventure to Europe. Along the way, they face the challenges of the desert, the sea and human nature.
Perfect days – Japan
Perfect days follows the journey of Hirayama, a middle-aged janitor from Tokyo, whose modest life is illustrated by his passion for music, books and photographs of trees. As it progresses, unexpected encounters reveal a dark and chaotic past, exploring themes of loneliness, escape and the search for meaning in modern life.
The Teachers’ Hall – Germany
In The teachers’ lounge, directed by Ilker Çatak, we follow Carla Nowak (Leonie Benesch), a math teacher who recently arrived at the school. Noticing a series of robberies in the area, she decides not to passively accept the situation. She then begins an investigation of her own, addressing the lack of understanding from colleagues, parents and students. Her main suspect is the mother of her student Oskar (Leonard Stettnisch).
It is worth mentioning that the awards ceremony will begin at 8pm and, on TV, will be broadcast on TNT or Max. But Terra will also broadcast the Oscars live.
