After two series – one fiction and the other documentary -, the first boy band in the world, Menudo, will be back in business.

Comedian and producer Mario Lopez has partnered with Menudo Productions to launch a new generation of Menudos. Testing will begin online at the end of the month and will extend to several cities in Puerto Rico in September, looking for new talent between the ages of 12 and 16.

“Like so many people around the world, I have grown up as a huge fan of Menudo,” Lopez said. “I am so excited and honored to be part of this project and to bring this iconic Latin boy band back to the world!”

The project, called “Menudo: A New Beginning”, is truly a new beginning for the “franchise”, 12 years after the end of the Latin boy band.

From its beginnings in 1977 to late 2009, Menudo dominated the pre-teen and teen Hispanic markets, selling multiple records of BTS and One Direction combined. The group also broke concert attendance records and set the standard for all subsequent boy bands. It also revealed Grammy winner Ricky Martin and singer and producer Robi Draco Rosa, among others.

Despite being widely copied, Menudo had a unique formula, replacing his singers as they grew up. This helped keep the group going for decades, always renewing their fans.

But absolute control of all decisions – and profits – in the hands of the music entrepreneur Edgardo Díaz has also generated many complaints. In addition to exploitation, he was charged with abuse in the recent documentary series “Menudo: Always Young” on HBO Max.

The new Menudos, however, will share all concert revenue, merchandise and music, as well as participate in decision making with a Miami-based management team made up of seasoned professionals, including veteran music industry producer Angel Zamora. .
