Fan Falls For Kevin Costner Scam In England

Eileen Leeks, 63, said she was the victim of criminals pretending to be the actor and his management team

Englishwoman Eileen Leeks, 63, is a big fan of Hollywood actor Kevin Costner, but her admiration has landed her in an unpleasant situation. She says scammers sold her a “fan voucher” for £100 (about R$700 in current conversion), with which she could meet the star.

The woman reports following a Facebook page she believed belonged to the Oscar-winning filmmaker Dance with wolves (nineteen ninety). And then she started receiving several messages telling her that, in order to become an official fan, she would have to buy a voucher, which would also give her the chance to meet the actor in person.

“They badgered me and I gave in because they said I wouldn’t meet him unless I got the Apple cards, so I bought two for £100 each,” she explains.

“I then received a message saying I had been scammed and (to actually meet Costner) I would have to buy a VIP membership card worth over £1,000.”

At that moment he became suspicious. “I thought: he’s a millionaire.”

In a brave move, the criminals even video-chatted Eileen to try to convince her that she was the real Kevin Costner. “His face was moving and that’s why I thought it was him. He was sitting in a chair in his office and he was moving. And he said, ‘I’m Kevin Costner and you’ve been fooled.'”

This was also part of the scam. Later, the criminals posing as Kostner’s “management team” contacted her again. “They said it wasn’t him during the video call that people were using his face and voice to deceive other people.”

She ultimately chose to report the case. The Englishman says the scammers tried again, this time through a private messaging service, promising work and accommodation in the United States.

“I thought, ‘I can’t believe this, what the hell is going on?’ If fans think they’re going to get a job and an apartment in America, they’re going to miss out on a lot by going there,” he thought at the time.

“I’m unemployed and I’ve lost a lot of money, so I’m not very happy,” the victim said. The real Kevin Kostner has not commented on the case.
