“I was the one who came closest to being arrested in Brazil as a joke,” says Danilo Gentili

In an exclusive interview with “Estadão”, the SBT host recalled the trial involving PT MP Maria do Rosário: “I was scared, because something beyond the system happened there”

Daniel Gentile leads the list of comedians prosecuted for pranks in Brazil. That’s what the mural on one of the walls of My Fucking Comedy Club, his comedy club located in the central area of São Paulo, says.

After receiving the report from the State Present on site for an exclusive interview, Gentili was keen to present the table in which 117 appeals against the SBT conductor are recorded (data collected by his lawyer, he explains). The list below is Leo Lins AND Rafinha Bastos.

“I was the one who came closest to being arrested in Brazil for a prank,” Gentili recalls, referring to the episode with Maria do Rosário, when the comedian was sentenced to prison in the first instance, in 2019, after tearing up the PT deputy’s trial and going through the private parts.

“When the [processo] criminal, I wasn’t afraid. Afterwards I was afraid, because you start to understand how the system works and that the system doesn’t exist. The system is the judge of the day. There is no case law, consistency or a First Amendment to guide the discussion. If the judge on duty thinks you said something he doesn’t like, you’ll just go to jail. On that occasion, Zé de Abreu had spat in the face of a woman and Maria do Rosário had defended Zé de Abreu. Then I said: ‘Wait, I’m joking, it’s sexism. The boy spits in the face of a woman and it’s okay because he’s from your party?’. And then she didn’t like it, she sent it to the censor, I tore it up, I sent it back. Do you know what happened? The criminal judge dismissed the case and said: ‘This is freedom of expression, a form of protest.’ Here it is [Maria do Rosário] he took a pen, [o processo] It went to the judge in Rio Grande do Sul, the guy unarchived it, sent it to a trial in São Paulo and then I was convicted in the first instance. Then I got scared, because the system had closed the case. Something happened beyond the system. If I had been convicted in the second instance, I would have ended up in prison,” he recalls.

Just before taking the stage for a stand-up show featuring an appearance by actor Vincent Martella, Greg from Everybody hates ChrisGentili also expressed his opinion on the freedom of humor.

“The comedian is the canary in the coal mine. The miners would go with the canary in front because if there was poison gas the canary would die. The comedian is not an important person. The comedian’s opinion doesn’t matter. And it’s funny because people come, they ask the comedian things, he answers them and goes away. It doesn’t matter what I think about things, I have to admit that I’m a guy who is there, gets on stage and says a lot of bullshit for people to laugh at. That’s all I’m good at,” he says.
