The last journalist to interview Silvio Santos recalls the moment: “The dream came true”

Roger Turchetti was ignored several times, but he persisted and got rare interviews with the host and owner of SBT

Averse to interviews, Silvio Santos rarely stopped to talk to journalists when approached. One privileged person who always had his attention was Roger Turchetti, of the YouTube channel Intervenção.

He was the last journalist to interview the host and owner of SBT, on his 93rd birthday, December 12 last year.

“At the beginning of 2023, many fans asked me to surprise Silvio. At first I found it invasive. The idea matured until, in November, I felt something different, it occurred to me that it would be interesting to go to his house,” he recalls.

The day before, Roger says he received a signal. “I had a dream in which Silvio came out of the door, blew out the candles on the cake and served me.” It happened: in pajamas and in a good mood, the idol received the honor on the sidewalk of his villa.

“I was happy when I saw that he was lucid, he rationed quickly. He was thrilled with the surprise. Later I received an audio from Daniela Beyruti (daughter number 3, who runs the SBT) saying how much it had done him good,” says the journalist.

“I only know Roger,” said Silvio Santos, seeing the group that attended the impromptu birthday party on the street. The contact between the two had begun years earlier, in the journalist’s attempts to obtain an exclusive interview in front of the door of Jassa’s hairdresser and friend of the presenter.

“I once agreed with Silvio that he would ignore me six times and assist me the seventh time. Seven is my lucky number,” she says. “I put the whole saga on air so I could talk to him.”

In 2014, Roger was surprised by a job offer at SBT. “I was driving on Marginal, Silvio called me, I almost crashed the car. He told me he would hire me at a presenter’s salary to be a journalist. He set up my contract. He gave life advice as if he were a father taking care of his son. I wish I had saved the audio of that incredible call.”

The journalist retraced the main news programs of the station, participated in the presentation of Telethon and concluded the cycle on ‘Fofocalizando’. “I spent time with him behind the scenes, it was special to see that little man transform in front of me into Silvio Santos, vigorous”.

In early 2021, Turchetti recorded Silvio Santos taking the second dose of the covid19 vaccine. “Our meeting was a joy. He said a sentence that I didn’t give much importance to at the time, but now I realize how impactful it is: ‘Today is an important day because I woke up alive. The day I don’t wake up alive won’t be important.’”

With persistence, Roger Turchetti became the journalist who interviewed Silvio Santos the most

Months ago, the YouTuber spoke to sources about the presenter’s health. “They told me he wasn’t well, he had trouble walking and hearing. I didn’t want to believe it. Every time I met him, I saw how strong he was, his determination, his passion for doing TV.”

Roger Turchetti says a whistleblower has detailed the last days of Silvio Santos. “A source at the (Albert) Einstein hospital said he was fine on Thursday and Friday. They say that is the best separation.

Silvio Santos died in the early hours of Saturday, August 17, at the age of 93, of bronchopneumonia after being hospitalized for treatment of the symptoms of the H1N1 flu. “I have always attributed my personal path to a factor called luck, and no one can decipher what luck is. They say that luck is something that God gives to some people. I think that’s true,” the presenter said in the final interview with Roger Turchetti.
