Since I entered entertainment journalism and then television, I have had the chance to meet many of the characters I grew up with. I received a kiss from Hebe Camargo, drank wine with Ronnie Von, exchanged private messages on Instagram with Gugu Liberato, became friends with Leão Lobo, shared a program with Nelson Rubens. It all always seemed a bit surreal to me, when I remember observing everyone in the interior of Pernambuco, naive as I was, but Silvio Santos always seemed unreachable.
That’s why I was surprised and happy when Maisa Alves, consultant for SBT, invited me to participate in the “Troféu Imprensa”. My family has always been fascinated by Silvio Santos – sad note: my paternal grandfather died after being hit by a bus while he was paying for his Baú membership. I knew I was going to live an important moment and I surrounded myself with anticipation. At the time, I prayed for a negative Covid test at the station door. Although the owner of the channel has been surrounded by controversy, no one in their right mind on television doubts that he is the greatest communicator in the country.
In the locker room, surrounded by fellow journalists, I felt like peeing several times because of so much anxiety. I avoided drinking too many liquids, but it was inevitable. Added to this was the fear that Silvio would show up right when I was in the bathroom. That would be unforgivable. The tension existed because it was clear that he would show up whenever he wanted and everything would happen quickly so that we could be on stage. Everyone should be ready and waiting.
When the moment finally arrived, everything seemed extremely surreal. In a way, he seemed detached from my reality, observing everything from afar, as if it were impossible for that boy to be in the presence of the owner of the SBT. Silvio entered the locker room with a broad smile. He politely greeted each journalist. Thanks for the time. He made jokes – I would like to remember some of them, but the nervousness erased part of that moment – and he made sure to pose for selfies with everyone. Some, embarrassed, when they saw that he was available, rushed to take photos of themselves.
On stage I was fascinated by his ease. He remained standing, without stopping, except for technical breaks, for almost four hours. When I stopped to make adjustments or clarify doubts with the management, I always came back with an obvious technique, but one that I had never thought of. Bell (for silence) and applause (from the audience). This method allowed the program to always pick up where it left off. It worked very well. At a certain point, when someone addressed me – it happened to me -, he tried to be pragmatic: “your vote”. At that time I was on three different vehicles and I heard from him that it was a very long list and that he would not repeat them all every time. He knew things. The protagonist was the trophy and not the journalist.
When I least expected it, Liminha put me on stage to present the award to Danilo Gentili. And, standing, waving more than one green stick, but disguising it, I had the chance to interact face to face with Silvio in front of the cameras. I remember watching him closely, to make sure I was actually face to face with the most famous man in the country. At the same time that I felt free to joke and joke, I hoped that the moment would end soon, for fear of saying something stupid: what happens when I get nervous, I mess up.
When it was all over and I sat down, I saw that my hands were cold, my neck was stiff and my foot was sweaty. At that moment I understood that I was going to live something that would mark my existence forever and that would hardly happen again. And it never happened again. This was one of the last recordings of Silvio Santos’ life. How lucky I was.
