The presenter Silvio Santos, who died last Saturday, 17, at the age of 93, never hid the fact that he had not studied higher education. He studied only one course in technical accounting, at the Escola Técnica de Comércio Amaro Cavalcanti, today Colégio Estadual Amaro Cavalcanti, in Largo do Machado, central region of Rio de Janeiro. Despite not having a degree, he was a true supporter of the education of his six daughters.

Cintia, Silvia, Daniela, Patrícia, Rebeca and Renata have studied higher education at renowned institutions in Brazil and around the world, but one of them seems to be the family’s favorite: Liberty University. This is because Daniela Beyruti, Patrícia Abravanel and Renata Abravanel studied social communication and administration, respectively, at the institution.

The university is located in Virginia, United States, and was founded in 1971 by Pastor Jerry Falweel Sr.. Essentially Christian, the institution states that its goal is to develop Christian men and women, with the values, knowledge and skills to impact the world through the teachings of Jesus Christ.

The college calls itself liberal and is made up of 16 colleges and schools. The programs offered cover, among others, the fields of education, medicine, religion, law, aviation, film arts and business.

History of the University of Liberty

The institution was founded as “Lynchburg Baptist College” in 1971. Four years later, in 1975, the name was officially changed to “Liberty Baptist College.”

With the death of the pastor who founded the college in 2007, his son Jerry Falwell Jr. became the institute’s president. During the next decade, the university entered a phase of expansion: new buildings were built, including the Jerry Falwell Library and the Center for Medicine and Health Sciences.

The college is proud to have more than 300,000 influential alumni in their respective fields, including the U.S. Senate, Google, Discovery Channel, Bank of America, and CNN.

Students and missionaries

Students can participate in various missions and ministries throughout the institution. After-school activities include weekly events, local community projects, or global mission trips.

There is room for student artists – singers, musicians, actors and creatives in general – and for student leadership groups.

What the institution offers

There are various activities for students outside the classroom. Fun and leisure activities can range from relaxation or adventure, entertainment or exercise, partnerships or competitions.

These activities take place at the Snowflex Center, a sort of campus in the mountains, where students can, for example, ski. Other spaces include the LaHaye Recreation and Fitness Center, the cafeteria, and Hydaway Outdoor, a unit where students can camp and fish, run, bike, and follow guided trails.

It is also possible to live on campus, a traditional practice for American universities. The types of housing vary as described below:

  • Shared Houses – There are 3 buildings of this type, with 9 floors, patio and terrace. The rooms are double and have private bathroom. Each floor has a shared laundry and other services;
  • Apartments: At East Campus, each apartment includes a full kitchen, washer and dryer, as well as a dining room and living room. There are also three bedrooms with living space for two to three students in each unit;
  • South Tower – The villa is traditional, with double bedrooms. On each floor there is a shared bathroom and a laundry room;
  • The Circle – The style of accommodation is designed to allow three people to share the same room. There are laundromats nearby;
  • La Collina – In this community house, rooms are designed for three people, with a shared sink and bathroom on each floor;
  • Suite ‘The Quad’: these are five suites designed for two people, with two shared bathrooms, living room and kitchen. There is no laundry. Students can use the service at nearby residences.
