Journalist Marcelo Carrião, arrested for drug trafficking in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, was released on Tuesday 3, after the defense filed a request to revoke his pretrial detention. The Prosecutor’s Office analyzed the request and expressed its approval after the hearing held on August 26.

The 3rd Criminal Court of Santos decided to grant the release, but Carrião will still have to comply with the precautionary measures. The journalist must attend the forum monthly and cannot leave the city without judicial authorization.

According to lawyer Marcelo Cruz, the former presenter should leave CDP II in Guarulhos this Tuesday. “It was a long battle, but the Prosecutor’s Office and the magistrate were right. After all, pretrial detention should be adopted as a measure of last resort, only in situations of extreme necessity,” says the criminal lawyer.

Marcelo Carrião was arrested for drug trafficking after being identified as a supplier of illicit drugs to a criminal group. He was arrested by the Civil Police during Operation Iron Dome I on February 28 in Santos.

According to the Secretariat of Public Security (SSP), fieldwork led to the arrest of seven men, including the communicator, aged between 19 and 51, responsible for drug trafficking in the region using the “drug with disc” modality.

The criminal group was discovered after the arrest of two women days earlier. Through them, investigators identified a “disco drug” business operating in the Gonzaga neighborhood of Santos. In total, the police executed nine search and seizure warrants in Santos and São Vicente.

Police seized more than 4,000 portions of drugs including marijuana, hashish, skunk and LSD. Police also seized a 9mm pistol and several cell phones.

Carrião is said to be the gang’s drug supplier. The Civil Police found three greenhouses with marijuana plantations in a house on Rua Joaquim Nabuco, in the Vila Matias neighborhood of Santos.

According to investigations, among drug traffickers he was known by the nickname “Vovozinho”.
