Presenter who quit TV is caught asking for votes on subway late at night

Dudu Camargo tries to enter politics a little over a year after being fired from SBT

It was past 10:30 PM on Tuesday (24). At one of the exits of the Bresser subway, in the eastern area of São Paulo, a young man in a jacket and tie and a white cap approached the users to distribute the campaign holy cards. It was Dudu Camargo.

A few people recognized him and asked to take a selfie. Most walked right by, tired after another hard day at work. The presenter is struggling in his bid to be elected as a Republican Party councilman in the country’s largest city.

To venture into politics, in June he left TV Meio Norte, based in Teresina, Piauí, where he directed the daily news program ’40 Graus’, which focused on police news. He spent only 7 months at the station. At the time, rumors spread that he was negotiating to join Record’s ‘A Fazenda 16’, but his return to the capital of São Paulo was to launch his political project.

At 26, Dudu is trying to gain a new national profile after the setback he suffered at SBT in June last year. The communicator was fired after 7 years on the channel. Until then, he was considered untouchable because he was protected by the company’s owner, Silvio Santos. Vice President Daniela Beyruti had carte blanche to make changes and chose to fire the young presenter of ‘Primeiro Impacto’.

In an interview with the program ‘Fala Que Eu Te Escuto’, hosted by the Record bishops, Dudu Camargo said he was persecuted in the station. “It was a work built from the moment I debuted on television,” he said.

“(Silvio Santos) defended me as long as he could, as long as he had an active voice in that company. (The firing) happened right during the change of command. The cat is out, the mouse is in.” The SBT management preferred not to discuss the controversy.

On August 17, as soon as Silvio Santos’ death was announced, Dudu went to the Albert Einstein Hospital. He gave interviews to television channels and portals. “I have enormous gratitude. He was a father not only for giving me the opportunity, but also for supporting me and defending me,” he said.
