A video from the 1991 Oscars served to lift a weight off Kathy Bates’ shoulders

On “CBS Sunday Morning,” Kathy Bates recalled her mother’s cool reaction when she won the Oscar for best actress for her performance in “Misery” at the 1991 ceremony.

“He told me, ‘I don’t know what all the fuss is about. You haven’t found a cure for cancer,’” he said. The artist expressed regret for not dedicating the award to his mother. “I forgot to thank her that night.”

Host Ben Mankiewicz corrected her, saying that Kathy had mentioned her mother at the end of her speech. The actress, however, insisted she ignored it. The journalist showed an excerpt of his demonstration on stage, holding the figurine in his hand.

“I would like to thank my family, my friends, my mother at home and my father, who I hope is watching somewhere.” After watching the tape, Kathy Bates clasped both hands over her mouth in disbelief.

In those 33 years she had never seen the video and felt guilty because she believed she had not been grateful to her parents who had financed her dream of studying acting. The award-winning actress thanked Ben Mankiewicz for freeing her from guilt.

Kathy Bates’ father, Langdon, died in 1989, two years before she won the Oscar, so she said, “I hope he’s looking somewhere.” His mother, Kathleen, died in 1997.
