Eike Batista, 67, one of Brazil’s most controversial businessmen, recalled the three months he spent in prison in the Bangu penitentiary, in Rio de Janeiro, and his new financial reality in an interview this Sunday 20th.

“We ate rice without salt, it tasted like plastic. How do you want to treat prisoners like that? It’s not that kind of punishment that changes people,” he said Spectacular Sundayfrom Record TV. He also claims to have learned in prison that “half the young people who are there shouldn’t be there.”

Eike, who was considered one of Brazil’s richest men before losing 90% of his fortune in just over a year, also said he no longer “cares” about titles like “billionaire”.

“When we are younger, we have the ambition of a billion, even a trillion. But after a certain age, the most important thing is the projects, the legacy that Brazil needs,” he explained.

When asked about his new standard of living, he stated that “he’s had enough.”

Eike is currently married to the lawyer and entrepreneur Flavia Sampaio, with whom he has two children. He is also the father of Thor and Olin, the result of his marriage to Luma de Oliveira.
