Who are they? The mother holds the creators of artificial intelligence responsible for the death of her son

Mother claims artificial intelligence drove her son to suicide

The mother of a 14-year-old teenager who died in February this year is suing the creators of an artificial intelligence tool on the web, accusing them of having been ”accomplices” of what happened.

The young man Sewell Setzer IIIwho lived in Orlando, Florida, became passionate about using Character.AI, an app that simulates conversations with fictional or real characters.

According to the boy’s mother, Megan Garciathe young man’s mother spent hours on the app, interacting with a chatbot inspired by Daenerys Targaryen, a character from ‘Game of Thrones’.

The woman accuses AI and its founders, Daniele Freitas AND Noam Shazeernegligence, manslaughter and deceptive commercial practices, according to the portal Ugo Gloss.

In a statement, he criticized the app and its creators: “A dangerous AI chatbot application marketed to children abused and attacked my son, manipulating him into taking his own life. Our family has been devastated by this tragedy, but I am speaking to warn families of the dangers of deceptive and addictive AI technology and to demand accountability from Character.AI, its founders, and Google.”

The mother reports that her son had daily conversations with the alleged suspect “Daenerys”, and that, once, the “character” had asked him if he had a plan to commit suicide.

“‘Daenerys’ asked at one point Setzer if he had a plan to kill himself. Setzer admitted that he did, but “didn’t know if it would be successful or if it would cause him great pain.” The chatbot would tell him, ‘There’s no reason not to pursue this.'”he stated.

Megan Garcia also stated that the widespread use of the platform has further increased the teenager’s depression and that Character.AI”knowingly designed, operated, and marketed a predatory AI chatbot for children, resulting in the death of a young person”.

Repercussion

After the major fallout, Character.AI expressed its condolences to the family, reinforcing its commitment to safety and denying the allegations in the case.
