The actress Queen Duarte has submitted an application to Justice for the settlement of a lawsuit brought by the director Janaína Diniz, daughter of Leila Diniz (1945-1972). The information was confirmed by the actress’ defense Estadao this Monday, 30th, Regina was sentenced to compensate Janaína with R$30 thousand after a publication in support of the military dictatorship and used a photo of Leila.

THE Estadao contacted Janaína Diniz’s team, who informed them that they would not comment on the matter.

In a note sent to the record, Regina’s defense claims that the actress “has already deposited the amount due, published the sentence and apologised”. The text also specifies that the artist, while apologizing, “considers the publication that led to the trial to be harmless, [que] highlighted the quality and strength of women who fight, in good faith.”

Read the full note:

“Mrs Regina has already paid what was due, published the sentence and apologised, although she considered the publication that led to the trial harmless, on the contrary, it highlighted the quality and strength of women who fight, therefore, in good faith .

Therefore, once the decision has been complied with, the conclusion of the process becomes imperative.

This is the request made, waiting to be approved.”

After the actress’ apology, the lawyer representing Janaína, Maria Isabel Tancredo, denied that Regina had made the retraction requested by the courts. According to the lawyer, the artist did not fulfill his obligation to explain to his followers that Leila Diniz never supported the military dictatorship and was against the regime. At the moment, Regina’s defense did not comment.

Understand the case

In December last year, Regina Duarte shared a video that contained the image of Leila Diniz and other actresses, who were protesting against the censorship imposed by AI-5 at the time. However, in the caption, the artist wrote: “The Army will need the plenary sessions of the next government to be ashamed of what is happening in our country and take action.”

The court understood that the video misleadingly implied that the actresses supported the military coup. “It is humiliating and, moreover, deeply painful, for Janaína and many other women who took part in this historic struggle, to see the figure of their mother linked to the very thing she fought so hard against,” the sentence reads.

Regina was ordered to pay R$30,000 to Janaína Diniz, as well as publicly recant. In the post in which she stated that she had recanted, published on Monday the 15th, the actress included the sentence approved by judge Keyla Blank.

Leila Diniz

Leila Diniz became a representative figure in the fight against conservatism during the military dictatorship. The image of the pregnant actress Janaína, on the beach, became a feminist symbol. In her interviews she expressed herself in favor of female emancipation, declaring herself to be a free woman, which ended up making her the target of censorship by the military.

In 1993, Rita Lee the actress mentions in the song All the women in the worldon the verse: “Every woman wants to be loved/Every woman wants to be happy/Every woman is a bit of Leila Diniz”.

The actress died in 1972, the victim of a plane crash.
