UCCONX goes viral on social media as the biggest geek fiasco in Brazil

UCCONX, heralded as a major pop culture event, kicked off this Thursday (7/27) going viral on social media. But not for desirable reasons.

The first novelty was the cancellation of the main attraction: Millie Bobby Brown, Eleven of “Stranger Things”, scheduled for Saturday (7/30) and Sunday (7/31). In a first statement, the organizers of the event said that she could not travel because she tested positive for Covid-19. Hours later, another statement arrived, stating that the reason for the actress’s cancellation was “due to her professional commitments, in addition to the risk of exposure to covid-19”.

Then the photos of the interiors of the Anhembi Complex in San Paolo appeared. Instead of themed stands, with trade and lots of interaction between the audience and artists, the images highlighted a huge void with few people.

The entrance, which cost at least R $ 125 (half ticket), but could exceed R $ 5 thousand in the most VIP package, promised many attractions and stands. But the photos showed that the stands of the shops and Artists Alley, an area dedicated to cartoonists and illustrators, were not occupied. In a short time, complaints about the lack of things to do at the event turned into coup charges.

There was no shortage of comparisons with the Fyre Festival, a musical event that promised a luxury festival on a paradise island and delivered accommodation in shabby tents and cancellation of attractions. The Fyre fiasco was so big that it resulted in a lawsuit and two documentaries, one of which is available on Netflix.

If the images of Anhembi aroused suspicion, reports of former employees of the organization soon arrived, who used social networks to report the scandals. Karla Tomaz, for example, begins her Twitter post by saying that she worked “for a long time in organizing the event and in the end I was beaten for months without getting paid”.

“There were years of empty promises and late payments. Until the directors disappeared forever,” he denounced. “My career and my life have been shaken in a way that I have not yet been able to recover. So, for whoever is going to the event tomorrow: know that you are funding an organization that has blown up a lot of people.”

Another former employee, Hugo Melo, said that at the time of the announcement of the presale (October 2021), “the site was not ready, the system was not ready, we had no confirmed attractions, nothing to announce the presale”.

He said UcconX’s origin dates back to 2019, when “two friends decided to enter the geek segment, despite knowing nothing about the geek universe. By leaps and bounds, they were attracting people to the project, including the other partner. the partner was in charge of the commercial side and brought to the event a well-known longtime investor who invested R $ 8 million. With the money in their pockets, they started spending madly. “

“Within a few months the money ran out, which had serious repercussions. The investment, shocked […]prosecuted the partners, “he added.

“The cancellation of Millie and George Takei is just the beginning,” he accused. “From now on, UCCONX will go down in history, very well called FYRE FESTIVAL GEEK. My advice to all injured people like me: pursue your rights, even if nothing comes of it, we can’t let these guys go goes unpunished”.

The Universal Creators Conference Experience (UCCONX) is produced by a company of the same name, created for the event, but this year the project passed into the hands of BBL, specialized in eSports. BBL reported that their responsibility would be on the next (next!) Edition.
