Maya Massafera noted that it changed the color of the eyes through keratopigmentation, a tattoo made in the cornea. “I am disgusted by my eye, which was supposed to be green, but it is blue and green,” said the influencer on the Instagram stories on Tuesday 17.
The surgical procedure is performed by applying the pigments to the cornea to change their color, both for aesthetic and functional reasons. The cornea is the transparent lens found in the front, outside the eye. It is usually transparent, it is not what gives the color of our eyes. The structure that gives the different color of our eyes is the iris, the colored ball around the pupil, which is located inside the eye, behind the cornea.
“The keratopigmentation colors the cornea, making it appear from afar that the eye has changed color. But approaching, anyone who realizes the difference,” explains dr. Halim Feres Neto, ophthalmologist, member of the Brazilian Council of ophthalmology and director of the vision of Prisma.
It is prohibited in Brazil for aesthetic purposes in the eyes they see and are released only for cases of blindness or bass of severe vision and irreversible corneal scars.
“It is a procedure with excellent results for people who have lost their vision and have scars in the cornea, because it is possible with pigmentation to improve the appearance of the eyes, making them normal”, explains the doctor.
The expert emphasizes that keratopigmentation brings some risks: “Like corneal perforation and infection. Furthermore, it is likely that, doing the procedure, the person will develop photophobia and have compromised visual field. So it is mainly indicated to be done to the eyes that they no longer see,” he says.
The procedure can still make it difficult to perform exams such as the mapping of the retina and the intraocular interventions, such as cataracts. “And since it is an irreversible procedure, when the time comes to do a cataract surgery there is no way to return,” he added.
