Bipolar disorder: the disease requires continuous follow -up and emotional support

Know the signs, the importance of diagnosis and the way family support can transform life

The World Health Organization (WHO) underlines that bipolar disorder affects 140 million people around the world. In Brazil, the disease reaches 2.5% of the population and symptoms appear almost always before 30 years. Famous like the Brazilian singer Lucas Luco and the American singer Demi Lovato has been diagnosed with the disorder and have already spoken publicly. According to Dr. Fernanda Rizzo (CRM-ES 15.099 and RQE 11,882), post-graduate in psychiatry, many people still associate bipolar disorder with simple mood variants, such as having good and bad days. However, it is a mental health condition characterized by intense and lasting episodes of depression and euphoria (mania or hypomania). These episodes can significantly interfere with routine, personal relationships and professional life. Also, remember that the disorder has an important genetic component. However, also environmental and lifestyle factors – such as trauma, high levels of stress, unregulated sleep and use of substances – influence their development.

Characteristics of the states of mania and hypomania

According to the doctor, the mania is marked by extreme euphoria, impulsiveness, agitation, acceleration of thought and, in some cases, disappointments of grandeur. Ipomania, on the other hand, is a lighter version, since the person may seem more productive, sociable and self -confident than usual, without fully losing contact with reality. “Although positive, hypomania also represents an imbalance and can lead to risk behaviors. Often it goes unnoticed until a serious depressive episode succeeds,” he warns.

Differences in bipolar disorder with normal changes in mood

Unlike natural mood swings, the bipolar episodes last for days or even weeks and have a direct impact on the life of the person. The expert clarifies that during the mania phase, for example, impulsive behavior may occur, such as excessive expenses, accelerated language, drastic reduction of sleep and sense of invincibility. “Already in the depressive phase there are common isolation, apathy and even suicide thoughts,” he explains.

Treatment

Rizzo comments that the treatment of bipolar disorder includes the use of mood stabilizers, psychotherapy and particular attention to sleep and routine. He underlines that, with adequate follow -Up, it is perfectly possible to obtain stability and quality of life.

The role of family and friends

The expert underlines that supporting someone with bipolar disorder requires empathy, reception and understanding, and it is essential to encourage continuous treatment and avoid judgments. “Bipolar disorder is not laziness, exaggeration or passage of emotional instability. It is a medical condition that requires care. With adequate support, it is possible to live well with the diagnosis”, he concludes.
