Disney + announced the launch date and price of its ad version in the US at a market conference this Wednesday (8/10).
The new version of the platform will arrive on December 8 and, as expected, will not deliver on the promise of cheaper streaming. On the contrary, the new prices confirm the negative forecasts on the novelty.
The “cheaper” version of Disney + with added advertising will cost the same as the current ad-free version of Disney +. But those who want to continue accessing the service without advertising will have to submit to paying more for the subscription.
In other words, the “cheaper” version will make Disney + more expensive.
The ad-supported plan will be called Disney + Basic and will cost $ 7.99 per month, the current subscription price for the service. The current plan, on the other hand, has become, as expected, Disney + Premium, which will cost US $ 10.99 / month, an increase of 38%.
Disney + Basic will launch with approximately four minutes of commercials per hour.
It will start with 15-second and 30-second ads, but over time it will expand to a “full set of advertising products,” Disney’s president of advertising sales Rita Ferro said at an investment conference.
The ads will not include political or alcoholic content, nor will they appear on children’s profiles or preschool programming. The company predicts that most Disney + customers will opt for the cheapest, ad-supported plan over time. Since you have not changed the price, you will get a 100% profit on all the ads shown.
In addition to Disney +, the conglomerate will also raise the prices of Hulu and ESPN +, as well as the combination of three platforms for US subscribers.
“With our new ad-supported Disney + offering and an expanded range of plans in our streaming portfolio, we will provide consumers with greater choice at a range of price points to meet the diverse needs of our viewers and attract even more audiences. ample”. Daniel, president of Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution, said in a statement.
Apparently, Disney believes that raising prices is a way to attract more audiences.
The company plans to expand the launch of Disney + with advertisements internationally in 2023, CFO Christine McCarthy said at the conference.
