The composer and multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascal died on Saturday 13, at the age of 89. The family confirmed the information in the publication on the musician’s official social networks. He had been hospitalized since 30 August at the Samaritan Barra hospital in Rio de Janeiro, due to the respiratory complications caused by pulmonary fibrosis.

According to the medical relationship, the picture has worsened in the last few days and has evolved into more insufficiency of the organs. Death ends the trajectory of one of the most inventive and original figures of Brazilian music, recognized internationally for improvisation and fusion between genres such as jazz, Forró, crying and classical music.

Born in Lagoa da Canoa, in the Agresta de Alagoas, on June 22, 1936, Hermeto began playing during childhood. Albino had difficulty attending school and found a path of expression in music. During his career, he became known as “magician” for the ability to transform any object into a sound tool, from kettles to toys, through the sound of nature.

His discography brings together works of reference, such as the free music of Hermeto Pascal (1973), Slaves Mass (1977) and Hermeto Pascal and Group (1982). Alongside artists such as Airto Moreira, Egberto Gismonti and Vinicius Dorin, he consolidated a work that extrapolated the boundaries and influenced the musicians of various generations.

The recognition also came from abroad. Hermeto was celebrated with the names of Us Jazz and exhibited in the main international festivals, while maintaining a strong link with Brazilian popular roots. His music was described by critics as “universal” by the amplitude of references and experiments.

In a declaration, the family asked the farewell to be marked by celebration and not out of sadness. He recommended that, in honor of the artist, people listen to the wind, birds, running water and transforming these sounds into music – a gesture that symbolizes the legacy left by Hermeto Pascal.
