Daniela Mercury’s new album is about artificial intelligence and national self-esteem

Singer Daniela Mercury, 60, gave an interview to Earth now to talk about his new album, Cirandaia, which will be released next Friday, the 17th. The album, which celebrates 40 years of axé music, combines tributes to Brazilian popular music and discusses issues of national politics.

In the interview, the artist explained that the album’s name is a combination of ciranda and AI (artificial intelligence). “A circle of friends, a dance of friends, which has to do with terreiro and everything I do, which is collective, of Brazilian and Northeastern popular culture,” he said.

According to Daniela, the purpose of the album is to discuss the role of new technologies in addressing humanity’s challenges. “All technologies can be welcome if we know what we want to do with them. And the big question is this: how will humanity use artificial intelligence,” he said.

Topics such as the regulation of Big Tech and the influence of fake news on elections are also addressed in the songs. Furthermore, the artist explains that the songs are an attempt to pay homage to national identity.

“My greatest passion has always been to rise up, exuberate and make the Brazilian people feel respected and empowered. With my international career, I realize that we continue to oppress ourselves, to feel smaller and less important than we are and to move in this place that is not good for a citizen in a democracy,” he said.

The new work is the singer’s 22nd studio album and features special appearances from several artists, including Alcione, Dona Nete, Lauana Prado, Zélia Duncan, Vânia Abreu, Raquel Reis and Chico César. Mercury also boasts collaborations with Davi Kopenawa and his son Gabriel, who in addition to singing, acts as producer on some songs on the album.
