The death of Arturo Gatti Jr., son of Canadian fighter and boxing legend Arturo Gatti and Brazilian Amanda Rodrigues, is being investigated as a homicide, according to the teenager’s sister, Sofia Gatti. The 17-year-old was found dead earlier this month in the apartment where he lived with his mother in Mexico.

Arturo Gatti Jr.’s body was found by a neighbor and, until then, the case had been treated as a suicide. However, Sofia stated that she received “documents from authorities indicating that the case was being investigated as a homicide.”

The daughter of boxer Arturo Gatti also said that her brother’s body remains preserved to be subjected to further analysis and forensic examinations which are part of the investigations.

Sofia opened an online crowdfunding to raise funds to cover the costs of the investigation, which include legal fees, documentation, travel to Mexico, where her brother died, and the opening of a private investigation in the United States with expertise in international crimes.

On Friday evening, the 24th, the fundraising campaign had already received 27,300 US dollars, equivalent to over R$147,000.

The death of Arturo Gatti Jr. came 16 years after the death of his father, who was found dead in an apartment in Porto de Galinhas (PE) in 2009. Sofia Gatti also said that she does not believe that her father’s death was a suicide.

Arturo Gatti with his son, Arturo Gatti Jr.

I was too young to fight when my father was killed in Brazil in 2009. I am an adult now and hoped to have my brother as a life partner when he became an adult. We were a year away from beginning our journey together as brother and sister and our lives being forever linked beyond our blood. My mother tried to fight against the will made a few weeks before my father was killed and to leave everything to Amanda Rodrigues, mother of Arturo Gatti Jr.,” she wrote in the crowdfunding campaign.

After Arturo Gatti’s death, Amanda Rodrigues, mother of Arturo Gatti Jr., was jailed for 18 days on charges of killing the boxer. She was released after Brazilian authorities ruled the cause of death was suicide by hanging.

Arturo Gatti’s family never believed this version and hired private investigators, who declared that the death could have been a homicide due to a wound to the fighter’s head. At the request of the boxer’s relatives, the Canadian government exhumed the body and carried out a second autopsy, from which it concluded that it was not possible to confirm that a murder had occurred. The Brazilian government had access to the results of the private investigation and declared again that it was a suicide.
