A minute of applause, nervousness and prophecy: what William Bonner’s farewell to JN was like

The seriousness required of the hosts of the Jornal Nacional gave way to declarations of affection, moments of nostalgia and complicity between colleagues in William Bonner’s farewell to the journalists’ bench of TV Globo, on the night of this Friday the 31st.

Together with César Tralli, who will lead the presentation of ‘JN’ from Monday 3, and Renata Vasconcellos —who, coincidentally, will turn 11 years on the bench of the program this Friday—, Bonner had difficulty hiding his emotion during the last block of the journalistic show.

Just as when he announced his departure, Bonner, who left his post as host and editor-in-chief of ‘JN’ after 29 years, spoke of the possibility of adopting a ‘softer’ lifestyle when he takes up the post at Globo Repórter from 2026. He and his colleagues also joked about the ‘nervousness’ inherent in presenting the programme.

He remembered when he first presented ‘JN’ together with Cid Moreira, when he replaced Sérgio Chapelin during the holidays. “I said, ‘Cid, tell me something, at what point did you stop being nervous about doing the Jornal Nacional?’. He looked at me and said, ‘Never.’ I thought he was joking. I said, ‘Were you still nervous, are you nervous now?’. ‘I am, but less than you.'”

“I say that because, after 29 years on the bench, I’m very nervous. I’m winning both. I spent the day saying no,” Bonner admitted.

The program also highlighted Tralli’s career, which is approaching its 33rd anniversary at Rede Globo, and showed excerpts from historical accounts made by the new ‘JN’ host, such as the death of Princess Diana, the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 and, more recently, the funeral of Pope Francis.

Renata Vasconcellos, in turn, praised her role as presenter of the Jornal Nacional and made statements to her colleagues, as well as welcoming Tralli. Finally, Bonner revealed a “prophecy” to the new “JN” host.

“You will never go unnoticed in this country again, wherever you are. Welcome to JN, thank you very much for your presence. Congratulations on your arrival,” said William Bonner, wishing César Tralli good luck.

Tralli and Bonner also mentioned the ‘crowded’ studio for the host’s farewell, which was also attended by the family members of the trio of journalists. After the last goodnight, they headed towards their families: the new host was embraced by his wife Ticiane Pinheiro, his daughter Manuella, 6 years old, and his stepdaughter Rafa Justus.

And it was with applause, lasting more than a minute, and surrounded by friends from different areas of Rede Globo journalism that, after 29 years, William Bonner said goodbye to the Jornal Nacional.
