This Monday 3, Prince William received the keys to the city of Rio de Janeiro during a ceremony in Pão de Açúcar. During the event, the heir to the British throne made several stops to greet tourists and take selfies, before receiving the honor from Mayor Eduardo Paes (PSD).

This is William’s first official visit to Brazil. The trip includes engagements in Rio de Janeiro and Belém (PA), where he will represent King Charles III at the 30th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP30).

After being mobbed by tourists and received by the city mayor, the prince thanked them for the welcome. “It was an honor to receive the keys to the city on the iconic Sugarloaf Mountain in Rio de Janeiro, before an exciting few days with the Earthshot Prize and the United for Wildlife program. Thank you for the warm welcome, Mayor @eduardopaes,” he posted on social media.

In the coming days the prince will carry out a varied program in the country, with meetings with Brazilian authorities, indigenous leaders, community initiatives and innovation experts. In addition to activities focused on Brazilian biodiversity, he will also participate in the global summit of the United for Wildlife program, a partnership between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Interpol, the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) and the Federal Police.

William’s visit to Rio will end on Wednesday 5th with the award ceremony for the Earthshot Prize, an environmental prize he created, which will take place at the Museum of Tomorrow. This will be the fifth edition of the award. In recent years the prince has made environmental protection one of the main causes of his work within the royal family.

The Earthshot Prize is a global initiative to encourage and scale up innovative solutions to the planet’s biggest environmental challenges, such as climate change, air pollution and biodiversity loss.

In each edition, five winning projects are awarded, who receive 1 million pounds (approximately R$ 7 million) each to develop and expand their initiatives.
