Carlinhos Maia millionaire jewelry thief confessed to police that she followed the influencer’s social networks to commit a crime

The thief responsible for the millionaire robbery in the apartment of the digital influencer Carlinhos Maia, in Maceió (AL), revealed to the Civil Police that followed the life of the famous through social networks and who saw, there, an opportunity to commit the crime. Elibio Custodio Nepomuceno confessed to police that she learned from social media that the apartment would be empty on the date of the crime, because Carlinhos was reportedly being hospitalized for cosmetic surgery and her husband, Lucas Guimarães, was in Mexico on business.
The testimony was revealed exclusively by the Fantasticfrom TV Globe. Nepomuk is under arrest.
The same “detective tactic” was revealed by Aomar Ait Khedache. Known as “Old Omar”, he led a gang of criminals in the famous hotel room robbery where Kim Kardashian was staying in 2016 in Paris, France.
The two testimonials reveal that the excess of information shared by celebrities on social media is not always discarded after 24 hours from the publication of a Story on Instagram, for example. Or, again, they show that often there are not only fans and well-meaning people among the millions of followers on the platforms.

However, caring for what is shared on the internet should be universal, even if you don’t have more than a few hundred followers. Diogo Guanabaraa lawyer who specializes in digital law and personal data protection explains that small details can be of great value to a criminal.
“Nowadays, everything is information. Even a photo of my son in his school uniform is information for criminals,” he explains.
“We are all used, from childhood, to being told: ‘do not talk to strangers’;’ do not drink anything from anyone on the street ‘;’ do not walk in dark places’. But no one has ever told us’ do not click on suspicious links’, ‘suspect who you are talking to’, ‘do not provide your password’, ‘do not provide too much information’ “, stresses Diogo Guanabara, specialist in personal information data protection.
How to avoid Internet exposures
The main tips to avoid unnecessary exposures are: avoid leaving public accounts, to prevent anyone from accessing their photos and contacts; do not mark the location of your home, work and other popular places and never click on suspicious links.
“Don’t post too much information, don’t use social networks as a big diary. Don’t give out too much personal data and only accept people you know. Also, don’t expose your family too much. All of this is raw material for a crime,” explains the lawyer. “It is used to profile the victim so that an attacker can scam her.”
The lawyer also advises the user to always keep the operating system of the mobile phone or electronic device updated, with the latest version available. “These updates have corrected the vulnerabilities identified in previous systems,” justifies Guanabara, adding that this cure leaves the phone less susceptible to intrusions and scams.
