Singer John Lydon (aka Johnny Rotten), former lead singer of the Sex Pistols and author of the punk anthem “God Save the Queen”, famous for the line “she [a Rainha] he is not a human being “, he paid homage to Queen Elizabeth II, who died on Thursday (9/9).
On her Twitter profile, Lydon posted a photo of the queen with the caption: “Rest in peace Queen Elizabeth II. Mandala victorious.”
The phrase “victorious mandala” is a reference to the original text of “God Save the Queen”, as well as the photo he used in his post, the same one that served as the basis for the advertising art of the single.
“God Save the Queen” was released 45 years ago, just the week before the Silver Jubilee, an important national celebration commemorating the first 25 years of Elizabeth II’s reign.
Despite what the lyrics of the song say, the band members didn’t really believe the queen was leading a fascist regime or that she wasn’t a real human being.
Lydon himself made this clear when he wrote “God bless the queen. She endured a lot” in an editorial for the British newspaper The Times in June.
“I have no animosity towards anyone in the royal family. I never did,” he wrote. “It’s the institute that bothers me and the assumption that I have to pay for it. That’s where I draw a line. It’s like, ‘No, you don’t go on a ski vacation with my fee.’
The story of the song “God Save the Queen” and the Sex Pistols was recently starred in the miniseries “Pistol”, directed by Danny Boyle (“Trainspotting”), released just 10 days ago on the Star + platform.
The production was even threatened with a lawsuit from Lydon, but the other band members defeated him in court to allow Sex Pistols recordings, including the iconic “God Save the Queen”, to be heard on the series. .
Rest in peace Queen Elizabeth II.
