Emílio Orciollo Netto plays Rodrigo in the monologue written by Antonio Prata and on display at the Unimed Theater, in San Paolo

A little more than two years after the pandemic – still counting – and from the return to a normalcy that has nothing new, we are already far enough away from the emotional traumas that Covid-19 has generated in us to be able to sketch a few laughs about our insecurities. At least that’s the invitation to comedy Quite the oppositeby Antonio Prata, on display at the Unimed Theater, in San Paolo.
The monologue performed by Emilio Orciollo Netto tells the story of Rodrigo and Gabi, parents for the first time who have the child at the same time that the pandemic has put everyone inside their homes. If the arrival of a child naturally changes the dynamics of the couple, the arrival of a child in a chaotic context of health crisis and without any possibility of contact with the outside world increases the damage.
“What you see are concerns that many people identify with, because they are there. Let’s talk about true fatherhood and motherhood, it’s day to day. Because of the pandemic, all emotions are on the edge of the skin. (…) In the pandemic. It was difficult for everyone, especially the first few months, and the great thing about the show is putting it there for people to question and have fun at the same time, “evaluates the actor, who has been married to costume designer Mariana Barreto for 12 years.
Causing people to question is not a simple suggestion of the actor. This is because the show brings into question the sense of betrayal in the current context – of sexual freedoms, of the rediscovery of individuality in the post-pandemic -; the need to expose one’s desires to the partner, even if they involve an extramarital relationship … And how, finally, we are faced with the possibility that the partner may feel desire for another person as well.
Problems of the world in deconstruction
Rodrigo, character played by Emilio Orciollo Nettohe even boasts not only being a “straight-man-cis-white”, but also being a good husband and father, the type who washes dishes, picks up baby pies, washes and irons household clothes .. . He wants another woman would not be a problem – quite the opposite.
But the character’s crisis of conscience highlights a moral dilemma that the 35+ generation still can’t resolve. Emilio says he identifies with that.
“I, in particular, am a chauvinist in deconstruction. I come from the generation of guilt, of fear; from this generation that is rooted in all these problems. I am in this process of deconstruction,” reveals the actor.
This is confirmed by Emílio Orciollo Netto, father of little Lorenzo, 5 years old Quite the opposite it is the opportunity that art has to discuss the issues of the deconstructed world we are living in. And, although he is still rooted in the sexist notions he learned from this patriarchal society, the actor hopes for a freer, more democratic and non-judgmental world for his son.
“I want a free world, I want people to be happy, to have the choice of what they want to do. This is how I take care of my child and I try to behave in my life. The show asks these questions,” he adds.
Quite the opposite it premiered on the 2nd and continues in a short season until October 9th at the Unimed Theater, in Sao Paulo. The show lasts 70 minutes. Friday and Saturday starts at 21:00; Sunday at 6pm. Ticket prices range from R $ 35 to R $ 90.
“Watch the show with an open heart. It raises a lot of questions about relationships, fatherhood and sexuality, and raising these questions, talking about them, is always very positive, regardless of gender and whoever it is, with whoever it is,” Emílio points out.
