Series producer and writer Julie Plec, creator of “The Vampire Diaries” and the spinoffs “The Originals” and “Legacies”, revealed that she recently faced a cancerous tumor in one of her kidneys. She first spoke about her illness during her attendance at the Barbara Berlanti Heroes Gala charity event on Saturday night (10/1), where she was one of the honorees.
Plec took advantage of the acceptance speech to make the revelation, saying he discovered the disease in 2020. A dermatologist diagnosed some red spots on his face as precancerous. A thorough examination revealed a tumor located in his kidney, which he had to remove.
According to People magazine, which covered the event, the producer said she felt no pain or symptoms and likened finding the tumor quickly to being “struck by lightning, but in a good way.” Later, she donated $ 100,000 to an institution that helps people with cancer.
Currently, Plec is executive producer of the “Vampire Academy” series, which airs in the United States on the streaming channel Peacock, and prepares several other productions. The most advanced is “The Girl on the Bus”, a political comedy starring Melissa Benoist (“Supergirl”), which will be released on Netflix.
