Actress Jada Pinkett Smith (“Matrix Resurrections”) is writing a memoir. Topics covered in the book include her rise to fame and “her complicated marriage to Will Smith”.
The book is described as a “no holds barred” retelling of the influential actress and TV presenter’s “tough but fascinating journey, from the depths of suicidal depression to the heights of her personal rediscovery and celebration of authentic female power.”
The play will trace Smith’s life from her troubled childhood (when her parents struggled with addiction), through the time she had to sell drugs to survive, before becoming a famous actress. In between her relationships, the book will talk about her friendship with rapper Tupac Shakur and her love story with Will Smith (“King Richard: Raising Champions”).
“The world has imposed many labels and narratives on Jada Pinkett Smith. This is due to the realities of our media landscape, but also to the roles that culture imposes on women,” said Carrie Thornton, vice president of Dey Street Books, head of publishing for books. “At the center of all the speculations and false stories is a woman who, like so many others, had to reconcile her personality with the needs of those she loves. This memoir is Jada giving the world her truth, taking readers on a lost girl journey in favor of a warrior woman. “
The memoir’s announcement comes after the controversy surrounding her husband Will Smith, who was banned from the Oscars for 10 years for slapping presenter Chris Rock at this year’s ceremony. The reason for the attack was a joke about Jade’s shaved head (she suffers from alopecia areata, an autoimmune disease that causes rapid hair loss).
In a June episode of her Facebook “Red Table Talk” program, Jada said she hoped the two “had the opportunity to heal and talk about this and reconcile the state of the world today.”
“We need both of us, and we all really need each other more than ever. Until then, Will and I have continued to do what we’ve been doing for the past 28 years. And that’s continuing to discover this thing called life together “. she added.
Still untitled, the book should be out next year.
