Brazilian artist accuses Netflix series of plagiarizing her comics: “I’m in shock”

The Brazilian artist Mary Cagnin used social networks this Sunday (11/20) to accuse the “1899” series, published on Thursday (11/17) by Netflixthat he plagiarized a comic he published in 2016.

“I’m in shock,” she began. “‘1899’ is just identical to my comic ‘Black Silence’ published in 2016,” she tweeted. And then you listed a series of “coincidences” between the two works, juxtaposing illustrations and scenes from European production.

The only difference, according to her, is that the series developed by German producers and screenwriters Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friese, who caused a worldwide frenzy with the plot of “Dark”, takes place on a 19th century ship, while ” Black Silence” is space science fiction.

“It’s all there: the black pyramid. The dead inside the vessel/vessel. The multinational crew. The seemingly strange and inexplicable things. The symbols in the eyes and when they appear,” wrote the Brazilian.

He went on to draw comparisons: “The writing in codes. The voices that call them. Subtle plot details, such as the personal dramas of the characters, including mysterious deaths.”

According to the author, it is possible that the German producers of the series became aware of her work when she attended the 2017 Gothenburg Book Fair in Sweden, an international event that made “Black Silence” available in English for publishers. and industry professionals. .

But it is worth noting that one of the screenwriters of the series is Brazilian – Juliana Lima Dehne, who made the national short film “Pare. Look. Listen”. (2009)

“I cried a lot. My dream has always been to be recognized for my work nationally and internationally. And to see something like this happen really breaks my heart,” lamented Cagnin.

The artist, who has already illustrated books and magazines for publishers Globo, Abril and Mol, recently launched her personal website (marycagnin.com), where “Black Silence” can be read in its entirety.

Cagnin didn’t say whether he plans to sue the producers or Netflix. For now she is evaluating “the procedures I should follow”. “If there’s anything that can be done,” she complained.

But he stressed his indignation: “We cannot think that just because we are Brazilians we should accept this kind of contempt and indifference. We have countless cases of gringos who copy us, in films, series and songs. As in the case of the film ‘The adventures of Pi’ which was copied from a Brazilian book,” he said.
