Betito Tavares’ sister reveals the actor suffered from schizophrenia

The actor Betito Tavares, known as “Coração de Estudante”, suffered from schizophrenia for about 10 years. The condition is a mental disorder that causes delusions, social withdrawal, and irritability.

Actress Milena Tavares said the television withdrawal caused deep sadness for her brother, who was already coping with the disorder, and caused his death last Thursday (12/15), by suicide, at the age of 42 . The peak of the actor occurred between 2000 and 2010, when Betito had successful characters, as was the case with Cardosinho in the soap opera Globo.

Milena explained that, seeing that her career did not take off on the screen, Betito felt alone and was afraid of contempt. However, she called him a man of integrity who instigated and excited those around him.

At first, Betito Tavares and his family were unaware of the presence of the mental disorder, which worsened in intensity due to lack of treatment. “It was hard to understand that there was a psychiatric problem,” Milena told Splash.

“When we realized it, it was difficult to make him understand that we had it. He didn’t accept the problem. By the time we were able to do something, it was already a bit advanced. We spent about eight years trying, but Betito was a wild animal, a wild horse that didn’t work to arrest. He didn’t want the treatment.”

With the resumption of the soap opera “Coração de Estudante” on the Viva channel, a producer searched for the original cast and suggested re-registering on Rede Globo. However, Betito was no longer able to memorize the lyrics.

“That made him even sadder. Schizophrenia causes depression… It is very difficult to see a disorder take so much shine away from a person. There is a lot of prejudice and he was left alone. He had fame, visibility and, suddenly, the disease took everything away”.

Milena added that the actor was hospitalized for six months last year. “He was under control, he was on medication, he was on medication,” she said.

“But, unfortunately, he couldn’t take the treatment, he couldn’t take the sadness, he couldn’t take life that he was following a path he didn’t want. And he took his own life.”

In one of his departures from the psychiatric clinic, Betito moved to Fortaleza with his sister and found work in the small factory owned by the Tavares family.

Previously, the founder of the Nós do Teatro group, Sidcley Batista, said that Betito had been suffering from a mental illness for some time. He didn’t explain exactly what the condition was and the public just speculated about depression.

“After years of living with mental illness… It’s not easy, especially for his family and loved ones, to see that talented and productive young man go through this. It certainly wasn’t easy for him.” he said. he said.

Now, Milena Tavares intends to celebrate her brother by helping to raise awareness of the stigma that accompanies mental disorders.

🇧🇷[O] the stigma around mental illness is very great and people live in very great loneliness. I decided to speak with the intention of getting people to normalize more, because so many people have issues. To end it, you know? May this case be a contributing spark so that people have a little more love, understanding and acceptance with those who have this problem.”

Betito became famous for bringing Cardosinho to life, in the soap opera “Coração de Estudante” (2002). The character was a medical student who was the “clown” of the college class, also, he was the son of farmers from the northeast, but he pretended that his parents were big landowners.

In 2003, Betito joined the cast of ‘Malhação’, playing Ceará. However, the actor’s career did not continue on the screen, and his last work on television was in an episode of the series “Casos e Acasos” (2008). He has continued to be involved in theater projects.
