Baby names of influencers and biblical figures are the most registered in Brazil in 2022

According to Arpen-Brasil, ‘Maria Alice’ and ‘Gael’ were the names that had the greatest growth compared to 2021; ‘Miguel’ led for the second consecutive year

TO social media also debunked the hegemony of Bible when families choose their children’s names in Brazil. If before the names of angels (and their female counterparts) were commonplace, such as “Gabriel”, “Rafael”, or saints, such as “Bárbara” and “Ana”, now the parental favorites bear a resemblance : are names of children of digital influencers.

According to National Association of Natural Persons Recorders (Arpen-Brazil), the most registered name in the country in 2022 is still biblical: “Miguel” remains in the lead for the second consecutive year. In total, 26,900 children were named after their parents. Among the girls, however, the preference was for “Maria Alice”, a name given by influencer Virginia Fonseca to her daughter. In all, 24,000 children were registered under that name.

After the birth of Maria Alice, daughter of Virgínia Fonseca; the name has grown exponentially and outgrown it

Compared to the records made in 2021, the names that have grown the most have been “Maria Alice” and “Gael” — name given by youtubers Christian Figueiredo to his son. The former ousted Helena from the leadership of the female names, while the latter took the vice-leader of the general classification with 25.2 thousand entries.

For the president of Arpen-Brasil, Gabriel Renato Fiscarelli, it is natural that social networks begin to gain space in people’s decisions. “We live in an era of great social dynamics and we are strongly influenced by the new personalities of the digital world, who end up dictating the tastes and preferences of Brazilians, and influencing tastes and behaviours,” he said.

According to the association, there is also a small change in families’ preference for biblical names. If earlier the Catholic Church seemed to have the greatest influence – since the names of angels, saints and prophets were common; now the favorites have a greater identification with Jewish culture, such as “Ravi”, “Noah”, “Theo”, “Liz”, “Eloá” and “Isaac”.

The complete data will be published this Tuesday 20, on the Civil Status Transparency Portal. The platform collects information from all 5,570 Brazilian cities. For the curious (and researchers), the site allows you to filter data by year, region of the country, states and municipalities. Also, you can segment by simple and compound nouns.
