Criticisms and ironies on the recently publicized relationship between Leandro Karnal and Vitor Fadul are among the fears of those who remain ‘in the closet’
Since publishing a post revealing that he is married to singer Vitor Fadul, historian and TV host Leandro Karnal, 59, has become the butt of countless challenges and teases for being gay and being in a relationship with a man 32 years younger.
He responded to some attacks on the web with intelligence and fine irony, characteristics that made him popular in the programs of CNN Brasil.
In the message in which he shared the intimacy, the pop philosopher commented on the decision to confirm what most people already knew.
“I’ve never thought that personal life is very relevant to others… However, there seems to be a time when not declaring it can seem to go along with bias. I am a happy person! Love is part of it.”
In the book published in late 2022, the 73-year-old actor and comedian Luiz Fernando Guimarães addressed homosexuality. “There’s never been this thing where they’re like, ‘Ah, he’s come out.’ Wardrobe, people, which wardrobe? I’ve always been gay, I haven’t hidden it from anyone my whole life.”
The artist, remembered as Rui from ‘Os Normais’, only spoke in the press for the first time in 2015, when he was 66 years old.
Just like Karnal and Guimarães, other famous people have only publicly come out as gay in adulthood.
Before perhaps they hadn’t even hidden or simulated a false heterosexuality, but they preferred not to talk about it and leave the doubt in the air.
Among these, Marco Nanini. In 2011, in an interview with ‘Bravo’ magazine, the unforgettable Lineu from ‘A Grande Família’ opened the game. At the time he was 63 years old.
“Sometimes they paint girlfriends, boyfriends. Girlfriends, no. Fiancés. But if they don’t, no problem. I have already experienced what I needed to live in this area”.
Recently, Marcos Caruso, 70, the invaluable Leleco of ‘Avenida Brasil’, resumed his relationship with the nursing technician Marcos Paiva on a social network.
For young artists, the conditions for coming out as homosexual are much more favorable than before.
So much so that many openly experience homo-affective relationships, such as Marco Pigossi, Armando Babaioff, Igor Cosso, Johnny Massaro, Jesuíta Barbosa and Irandhir Santos.
They have found a more tolerant society and greater support from family, group of friends, work environment and from organizations fighting against homophobia.
Veterans, in their youth, lived in an inflexible Brazil towards LGBT+. For the prominent community member, verbalizing sexual orientation was the end of his career.
Audiences and advertisers didn’t accept gay heartthrobs on soap operas. Even if they suspected or knew of homosexuality, they preferred to remain locked in the closet. Outright hypocrisy.
The pressure to stifle the truth was even greater in the 1980s when AIDS was directly associated with the sexual behavior of homosexuals. Several homosexual and bisexual artists have died of the disease, such as the singer Cazuza and the actor Lauro Corona.
The war against prejudice and for LGBT+ rights has strengthened over the years and has allowed young and old artists to free themselves from the ‘secret’ of their own essence.
Today there is greater awareness and respect, even if Brazil continues to be the country where this non-heterosexual population is killed the most.
In 2022, Ney Latorraca decided to show everyone his feelings for his partner of two decades, producer Edi Botelho.
The artist was hospitalized for almost two months due to covid-19 and had his partner by his side the entire time. Taking it publicly was seen as a gesture of gratitude and love.
Actor and comedian, Luís Miranda came out as gay in the press on the eve of his 50th birthday. In a conversation on the YouTube channel ‘Universo da Cris’, he talked about it.
“Every time one person comes out, they automatically help someone else as well. Someone who’s been abused, someone who’s been humiliated, someone who’s been hurt, someone who’s been hurt,” he said.
“Because someone’s sex position is thought to interfere with growth, income, work and social life. That doesn’t exist. An openly gay person can do a straight kissing scene, they can also do a girly scene, they can do anything. He is an artist. This has nothing to do with your preferences.”
Over time: older homosexuals are among the most discriminated against in the gay universe, where eternal youth is cultivated almost pathologically. In flirting apps, the 35, 40 year old man is already labeled a ‘crown’ and dismissed by a relevant section of the younger ones. The ‘young’, as they say in the field, ignore what the ‘old fagots’ had to go through in order for a homosexual to live freely today.
