“Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a cruel and untreatable disease”
the woman of Bruce Willis Emma Hemming Willis, her ex-partner Demi Moore and the actor’s children Rumer, Scout, Tallulah, Mabel and Evelyn have issued a statement confirming that Willis suffers from frontotemporal dementia, a neurodegenerative disease for which there is no treatment or cure.
Bruce Willis retired from the world of cinema in March of last year due to aphasia, a condition that affects the ability to speak, write and understand language.
“Since we announced Bruce’s aphasia diagnosis in spring 2022, Bruce’s condition has progressed and we now have a more specific diagnosis: frontotemporal dementia (known as FTD). Unfortunately, the challenges with communication are just a symptom of the illness Bruce is facing. While this is painful, it’s a relief to finally have a clear diagnosis.”, affirms the family.
The relatives of the star of ‘Die Die’, ‘Pulp Fiction’, ‘Armageddon’, ‘The Sixth Sense’, ’12 Monkeys’, ‘The Fifth Element’, ‘The Protected One’ and the series ‘Moonlight’ have stated that “FTD is a cruel disease that many of us have never heard of, and it can affect anyone.. For people under the age of 60, FTD is the most common form of dementia, and because it can take years to be diagnosed, FTD is likely to be much more common than we think. There are currently no treatments for the disease., a reality that we hope can change in the coming years. As Bruce’s condition progresses, we hope the media attention can be focused on shedding light on this disease that needs much more awareness and research.”
What is frontotemporal dementia (FTD)?
To understand what frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is, we must know that It is a disease that is grouped together with Alzheimer’s, although it is somewhat more rare. It is a neurodegenerative condition that diagnoses cell death in the area of the temporal and frontal lobes. These areas are closely related to personality, communication, emotions and language.
FTD has a higher incidence in men than in women, and usually occurs between the ages of 45 and 65 (Willis is 67). The difference with Alzheimer’s is that the person who suffers from it can keep their memory intact until very advanced stages of the disease..
There is no specific treatment or medication for FTD.the only thing that can be done is to try to alleviate its symptoms with relearning and reinforcement therapies.
The statement from Willis’s relatives ends by saying that “Bruce has always found joy in life and has helped everyone he knows to do the same.. It has meant that the world sees that sense of caring resonating with him and with all of us. We have been so touched by the love that everyone has shared for our dear husband, father, and friend during this difficult time. Your continued compassion, understanding and respect will enable us help Bruce live as full a life as possible.”
