Mira Sorvino criticizes Oscar for forgetting her father in posthumous tributes

Actress Mira Sorvino, Oscar winner for ‘The Mighty Aphrodite,’ slammed the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for ignoring her father, fellow actor Paul Sorvino (‘The Godfather of Harlem’), in the segment “In Memoriam” of the Oscars 2023, which aimed to honor the artists who died in the last year.

“I, for one, am remembering my father on this night of the Oscars,” she wrote in a post on her Twitter. “It’s incredibly baffling that my beloved father and so many other amazing and brilliant actors who passed away were left out. The Oscars forgot about Paul Sorvino, but the rest of us will never forget!”

Paul Sorvino died of natural causes last July, at the age of 85. In addition to him, actresses Anne Heche (“Jogando com Prazer”) and Charlbi Dean, among others, were also excluded from the tribute. In Dean’s case, his absence from her was even more marked, as she starred in “Triangle of Sadness,” which was in the running for the Best Picture Oscar.

But Paul Sorvino’s omission was just as surprising, because the Academy remembered to honor actor Ray Liotta with a scene from “Goodfellas,” unaware that Mira’s father was also in the film’s cast. Sorvino.

At the end of “In Memoriam,” a QR code was presented that took viewers to the Oscars website, where a more extensive list than was presented at the ceremony was made available. Paul Sorvino, Anne Heche and Charlbi Dean have all been included on the site’s roster. But, according to the actor’s family, it wasn’t enough.

“Paul wasn’t the only deserving soul excluded, and a QR code is not acceptable,” Paul Sorvino’s widow, Dee Dee, said in a news release. “The Academy needs to apologize, admit guilt and do better. Paul Sorvino deserves better, the public deserves better. Is the Academy cynical enough to forget the people they love and who have given their hearts to this industry?”

“Shame on the Academy if this isn’t fixed,” Dee Dee continued. “Mistakes are made, this was a big mistake. Please do something to fix it.”

In the face of criticism regarding the absences of ‘In Memoriam’, the organization of the Academy Awards released a statement which said: ‘The Academy receives hundreds of requests to include loved ones and industry colleagues in the Oscars segment ‘In Memoriam’ An Executive Committee representing all areas considers the roster and makes selections for broadcast based on the limited time available. All nominations are included in box A. [revista digital da Academia] and will remain on site throughout the year.”

Apparently, the Academy feels they don’t owe an apology.
