Actor Steven Seagal (“The Force on Standby”) has been awarded a medal by the Order of Friendship for his support of Russian President Vladimir Putin, even after the invasion of Ukraine. The award ceremony took place at an event organized by the International Russian Movement in Moscow, which was reported by The Independent newspaper.
In his speech, Seagal accused the US government of spending “billions of dollars on disinformation, lies” in the media to “attempt to discredit, demoralize and destroy Russia’s emerging morals.” However, he said such “disinformation efforts” hadn’t worked.
“More than half of the people in America really love Russia and love Russians and know they’re being lied to,” he said. “My father was pure Russian and I grew up in a pure Russian family because my mother was completely immersed in Russian culture and she had no parents. So I grew up with Russian culture.”
Seagal, who was born in the US state of Michigan, added that “I grew up loving Russia and loving everything I learned about the country from an early age. And to me, I’m one million percent Russophile and one million percent Russian.” . “
This isn’t the first honor Seagal has received from Russia. In 2018, the actor was appointed as a special representative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russia for Russian-American humanitarian relations.
According to President Putin, this year’s Order of Friendship medal was presented to celebrate Seagal’s “great contribution to the development of international cultural and humanitarian cooperation”.
In 2020, Seagal recorded a birthday message to Putin, saying, “Today is President Putin’s birthday. I just think we’re living in very, very difficult times right now. He’s one of the greatest world leaders and one of the greatest presidents around the world. And I really hope and pray that he gets the support and love and respect that he needs. And that all the tribulations that are happening now will end soon and we will live in a world of peace.”
Seagal also mentioned alleged Russian manipulation of the US election, which led to the election of Donald Trump. “Anyone who thinks that Vladimir Putin has anything to do with electoral manipulation, or even that the Russians have that kind of technology, is stupid,” he said. “And that kind of propaganda is really a distraction… so people in the United States of America don’t really see what’s going on.”
