Singer Abel Tesfaye, better known as The Weeknd, revealed in an interview with W Magazine that he may be close to retiring his stage name. Although he is working on a new album, the singer has stated that he is looking for a way to renew himself as an artist.
“I’m coming to a place and time where I’m getting ready to close the chapter of The Weeknd,” he said. “I’ll still make music, maybe as Abel, maybe as The Weeknd. But I still want to kill The Weeknd. And I will. Eventually. I’m definitely looking to shed my skin and be reborn.”
In recent years, the artist has achieved great success with the albums ‘After Hours’ (2020) and ‘Dawn FM’ (2022). Both projects have approached a very deep conceptual line, relying on music videos to drive a more complex narrative. Still untitled, their next album could conclude this trilogy.
During the interview, The Weeknd also talked about his new production, the series “The Idol”, of which he is the protagonist and executive producer. The drama takes place behind the scenes in the music business, where the singer will play a cult leader named Tedros.
Due to the taping of the series, the singer had to cancel a show at SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles. According to him, the experience of dealing with two different personalities was terrifying as it was his first job as an actor. HBO’s production also hit hard times due to layoffs, reshoots, and budget overruns.
Initially, development of the series was in the hands of director Amy Seimetz (“She Dies Tomorrow”), who left the production. Then, the position was taken over by Sam Levinson, creator of “Euphoria”, at the invitation of The Weeknd – who is also creator and producer of the series.
Starring The Weeknd and actress Lily Rose-Depp (“The King”), the storyline will also feature artists such as Troye Sivan (“Boy Erased: An Annulled Truth”) and Jennie Kim (member of BLACKPINK). With six episodes, the premiere is scheduled for June 4th.
